#1 - Ammonia gas for bacterial control in poultry litter

Abstract in English:

The current techniques used in the disinfection of reused poultry litter, such as lime addition, windrowing and plastic cover on the surface, do not guarantee the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms, causing damage to the environment and animal health. Gram negative bacteria, i.e., Salmonella and Escherichia coli, can be transmitted from one batch to another through reused litter, causing health damage to broilers and humans that consume food contaminated by these agents. Our study assessed the effectiveness of the methods plastic cover on the surface (PCS) and plastic cover on the surface with ammonia gas injection (PCSAI) in the control of Gram negative bacteria. The results obtained, both in laboratory conditions (Experiment 1) and in the field (Experiment 2), demonstrate that the method PCSAI with 0.22% ammonia gas had a significant reduction (P<0.05) of Gram negative bacteria in the period of 48 hours This new methodology for disinfecting poultry litter will allow its reuse in a practical and safe way, improving the preservation of the environment, of the health of broilers and consumers of poultry products.

O reaproveitamento de camas aviárias na criação de frangos de corte é uma prática muito utilizada no Brasil. Essa prática reduz custos de produção e contribui na conservação do meio ambiente. As técnicas atuais utilizadas na desinfecção de camas aviárias reaproveitadas, como adição de cal, enleiramento e lona na superfície, não garantem a eliminação de microrganismos patogênicos porque não geram quantidade suficiente de amônia. O gás amônia, em concentrações elevadas, tem efeito biocida. Bactérias Gram negativas, como as Salmonelas e Escherichia coli, podem ser transmitidas de um lote para outro através do reaproveitamento da cama, ocasionando prejuízos para a saúde das aves e dos humanos que consomem alimentos contaminados por estes agentes. Este trabalho avaliou a eficácia do método lona na superfície com injeção de gás amônia no controle de microrganismos Gram negativos. Os resultados obtidos demostraram que esse método controlou os microrganismos Gram negativos num período de 48 horas em camas de frangos de corte reaproveitadas. Assim, essa nova metodologia de desinfecção de camas de aviário permitirá sua reutilização de forma prática e segura, melhorando a saúde das aves e dos consumidores dos produtos avícolas.


#2 - Botulismo em bovinos alimentados com cama de frango, p.115-119

E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br Outbreaks of botulism caused by type C and D of the botulinum toxin are frequent in Brazil, and are associated with bone chewing and ingestion of contaminated food and water. This paper reports the epidemiological, clinical, pathological and laboratorial aspects of 7 outbreaks of botulism in beef and dairy cattle fed with poultry litter, which occurred in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, 1989-2000. Five outbreaks occurred in beef cattle herds, raised in confinement or under pasture conditions and supplemented with poultry litter, and 2 outbreaks occurred in dairy farms. From o total of 1,535 cattle supplemented regularily with poultry litter 455 animals (29.64%) died within 2 to 4 weeks. Morbidity and mortality varied from 3.47 to 100% in the 7 outbreaks. In one of the farms the lethality was 60.52%, and in others more than 88.43%, reaching 100% in three farms. Clinical signs were progressive paralysis, difficulties in moving, decubitus, normal alertness, decreased muscular tonus of tongue and tail, sialorrhoe and dyspnoe. At post-mortem examination of 30 cattle no noteable changes were observed. Spores of Clostridium botulinum were found in poultry litter samples collected on 7 farms. In liver, ruminal and intestinal fluid samples from 30 necropsied cattle botulinum toxin of type C (5) and D (9) or of the CD complex (1) were found in at least one of the samples collected from 15 animals, which confirms the clincial, pathological and epidemiological diagnosis of botulism.

#3 - Meat meal as source of Salmonella on a poultry farm

Abstract in English:

The presence of Salmonella on a commercial broiler chicken farm was investigated. Twenty two Salmonella serotypes were detected in meat meal, feed, rat faeces and poultry litter. The results suggest that the diet ingredients were the principal source of Salmonella infections to the farm, spreading them among the birds. The behaviour of the Salmonella isolates, as subjected to the 14 antimicrobial agents, is also reported. The levels of resistance were: carbecillin (94.23%), tetracycline (92.31%), nalidixic acid (73.08%), nitrofurantoin, (65.38%), cephalothin (59.61%), linco-spectin (44.23%), kanam) in (36.54%), amikacin (25.0%), neomycin (23.09%), chloranfenicol (19.23%), ampicillin (11.38%), cefoxitin (11.54%), cotrimazine (11.54%) and gentamicin (1.92% ).

Foi investigada a presença de Salmonella em uma granja comercial de frangos de corte. Foram encontrados 22 sorotipos de Salmonella, em amostras de farinha de carne, ração, fezes de rato e cama de aves. O quadro observado sugere que a farinha de carne foi o principal introdutor das salmonelas na granja, disseminando-as entre as aves. O antibiograma das salmonelas isoladas mostrou os seguintes percentuais de resistência: carbecilina (94,23%), tetraciclina (92,31 %), ácido nalidíxico (73,08%), nitrofurantoína (65,38%), cefalotina (59,61%), linco-spectin (44,23%), canamicina (36,54%), amicacina (25,0%), neomicina (23,09%), cloranfenicol (19,23%), ampicilina (11,38%), cefoxitina (11,54%), cotrimazina (11,54%) e gentamicina (1,92%).
