Abstract in English:

Amaral L.A, Isa H., Dias L.T., Rossi Jr. O.D. & Nader Filho A. 2004. [Efficiency of the disinfection of teatcups and teats during mechanic milking of dairy cows.] E-mail: lamaral@fcav.unesp.br The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the efficiency of the teatcup disinfection process by immersion into a disinfectant solution, using sodium hypochlorite and organic chlorine, to verify the residual chlorine dynamics in both solutions during milking time, and to evaluate three premilking disinfection methods: immersion, spray and sponge. Total coliforms, fecal coliforms, Staphylococcus sp and mesophilic microorganism counting was done. The results showed that the disinfecting clusters between individual cows, using immersion in sodium hypochlorite or organic chlorine solutions with a concentration of 150ppm, was not efficient for the rubber teatcup microorganism reduction. The organic chlorine solution showed more stability. Teatcup is a potential microorganism vehicle for milk and the mammary gland. Disinfection of the teats reduced the number of the microorganisms studied in all treatments, showing to be a simple method that can be used to reduce the microrganism transmission risks during milking and to increase the microbial quality of the milk.

Silva L.A.F., Fioravanti M.C.S., Trindade B.R., Silva O.C., Eurides D., Cunha P.H.J., Silva M.L. & Moura M.I. 2004.[Foot diseases in dairy cows: association with clinical mastitis, metrites and predisposing factors.] Postal 131, Goiânia, GO 74001-970, Brazil. E-mail: lafranco@vet.ufg.br With the objective to investigate a possible association between foot diseases, clinical mastitis and/or metritis and predisposing factors for foot diseases, 5300 dairy cows from 80 intensive and semi-intensive farms were used. In 325 (6.13%) cows only foot disease was diagnosed, in 35 (0.66%) foot disease and clinical mastitis, in 52 (0.98%) foot disease and metritis, in 28 (0.53%) foot disease, clinical mastitis and metritis, in 128 (2.42%) only metritis, in 165 (3.11%) only clinical mastitis, and in 89 (1.68%) cows metritis and clinical mastitis. Rapid changes in the diet, high exposure time of hoof horn to slurry and wet conditions, concrete floors, use of footbaths, low frequency of claw trimming, irregular quarantine, and no attention to health aspects during acquisition of the animals were considered as major risk factors for the occurrence of those diseases. The McNemar test for dependent samples showed significant statistical differences between the occurrence of foot disease, clinical mastitis and metritis, in spite of the poor association between those diseases. It was concluded that there was no expressive relationship between foot diseases, clinical mastitis and metritis in lactent cows.

#113 - The hornfly, Haematobia irritans: behaviour and damage caused in Nellore cows and pre-weaning calves, 22(3):109-113

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Bianchin I. & Alves R.G.O. 2002. [The hornfly, Haematobia irritans: behavior and damage caused in Nellore cows and pre-weaning calves.] Postal 154, Campo Grande, MS 79002-970, Brazil. The hornfly and tosses caused by it in Nellore cows and pre-weaning calves where studied, using two groups of 60 animals each, one group with a natural infestation and the other without hornfly, during four consecutive years. It was seen that the number of flies on the cows did not exceed an average of 80 flies/animal in all years of observation. The majority of the cows (83%) had few flies, whereas 17% had larger numbers. The calves were infested with few flies. Rainfall in excess of 100 mm during short periods diminished fly infestation. Weight gain in the cows without flies (treated with insecticides) as well as their calves was greater than in the control cows, but not statistically significant (P>0.05). Mean percentage pregnancy during the four years was 15% more in treated cows than the non-treated animals, and this difference was probably due to the infestation of the bulls.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 22(3):109-113. Embrapa Gado de Corte, Rodovia BR 262 Km 4, Cx. Postal 154, Campo Grande, MS 79002-970, Brazil.

#115 - Ultrastructural observation of the airways of recovered and susceptible pigs after inoculation with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, 18(1):1-7

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Irigoyen L.F., Van Alstine W, Turek j. & Clark L.K. 1998. Ultrastructural observation of the airways of recovered and susceptible pigs after inoculation with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. To determine the morphological differences in the epithelium of the airways of recovered and susceptible pigs after Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae challenge, twenty-four 4-week-old M. hyopneumoniae-free pigs were intratracheally inoculated with 107ccu/ml of a pure low-passaged culture of the P5722-3 strain of M. hyopneumoniae challenge material. Eight pigs (group I) were challenged at the beginning of the experiment and rechallenged 3 months late 1: Group II pigs were also challenged at the beginning of the experiment and necropsied 3 months later: Group III pigs were challenged at the sarne time as the rechallenge of group I pigs. Eight nonchallenged pigs served as contrais (group IV). Three days after the second challenge of group I and the first challenge of group III, and every 3 and 4 days thereafter, two pigs from each group were euthanatized by electrocution and necropsied. Samples of bronchi and lung tissue were examined using light and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Macroscopic lesions were observed in the lungs of all group III pigs (average = 4.74%) and were characterized by purple-red areas of discoloration and increased firmness affecting the cranioventral aspect of the lungs. Macroscopic lesions of pneumonia in groups I and II were minimal (less than 1%). There were no gross lesions of pneumonia in contrai (group IV) pigs. Microscopic lesions were characterized by hyperplasia of the peribronchial lymphoid tissue and mild neutrophilic infiltrates in alveoli. Electron microscopy showed patchy areas with loss of cilia and presence of leukocytes and mycoplasmas in bronchi of susceptible pigs (group III). The bronchial epithelium of rechallenged (group I), recovered (group II), and control (group IV) pigs was ultrastructurally similar indicating recovery of the former two groups. Although mycoplasmas were seen among cilia, a second challenge on pigs of group I did not produce another episode of the disease nor did it enhance morphological changes, suggesting that those pigs could become carriers of M. hyopneumoniae.

#116 - Abortion in cows during experimental poisoning by the pods of Stryphnodendron obovatum (Leg. Mimosoideae), 18(1):35-38

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Tokarnia C.H., Brito M.F., Driemeier D., Costa J.B.D & Camargo A.J.R. 1998. [Abortion in cows during experimental poisoning by the pods of Stryphnodendron obovatum (Leg. Mimosoideae).] Mimosoideae). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 18(1):35-38. Projeto Sanidade Animal Embrapa/UFRRJ, Km 47, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. The ripe pods of Stryphnodendron obovatum Benth. collected in Mato Grosso, were given to seven cows 3 to 7 months in calf, at the dose of 5 g/kg/day, during 9 to 26 days. They caused a disease characterized by decrease in ruminal activity and appetite, salivation, difficulty in getting up, unstable gait, muscular tremors, loss of weight and in 3 of the 7 cows abortion between 20 and 30 days after the beginning of the administration of the pods; a fourth cow expelled a mumified fetus 7 months after the start of the experiment. In the aborted fetuses and in the placentas no significant macroscopic and microscopic lesions were detected. These experiments confirm the informations obtained on farms in the cerrado regions of the States of São Paulo and Mato Grosso, which say that abortion occurs in cows which consume the pods of S. obovatum.

Projeto Sanidade Animal Embrapa/UFRRJ, Km 47, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. Três vacas deram nascimento a bezerros normais.

#117 - Sensitivity and specificity of the Califomia Mastitis Test as a diagnostic tool for subclinical mastitis in quarter somatic cell count estimation

Abstract in English:

The California Mastitis Test (CMT) is a simple and widely used diagnostic tool for subclinical mastitis. lt is used even in areas where laboratory facilities are available for diagnosis and monitoring program purposes. CMT usually score 1-5, where 1 indicates a completely negative reaction and 2-5 increasing degrees of inflammatory reaction of the udder. The reactions 2-5, 3-5 or 4-5 may be considered as indicative of subclinical mastitis, because they are related to an increase of the somatic cell count (SCC) in the milk. This variation, however, may produce either false-positive or false-negative results. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the CMT in comparison with SCC. A total of 3,012 quarter milk samples from 760 lactating cows were examined. CMT was evaluated at the moment of sampling at cow side and SCC in the laboratory, with a fluoro-opto-electronic method (Fossomatic 90). The average CCS (x 1,000 cells/ml) for CMT scores were: 1 (79.9), 2 (333.5), 3 (670.3), 4 (1,354.0) and 5 (4,455.6). Three options for CMT interpretation were evaluated in relation to a range of CCS, starting from 100,000 cells/ml: (a) 1 versus 2, 3, 4, and 5; (b) 1 and 2 versus 3, 4 and 5; and (e) 1, 2 and 3 versus 4 and 5. The sensitivities of CMT scoring to detect quarters with SCC >200,000/ml were 79%, 61% e 34%for options a, b ande, respectively. The sensitivities of CMT scores for SCC >500,000/ml for options a, b ande, were, respectively, 93%, 82% e 54%. The sensitivity of CMT scores to identify subclinical mastitis was satisfactory (above 80%) when options b ande were used. The interpretation of CMT score 3 as negative for subclinical mastitis was considered as adequate (sensitivity around 80%) only when CCS ranged between 1,200,000 and 1,400,000 cells/ml. The specificities of CMT scoring for CCS of 200,000 and 500,000 were, respectively, 90% and 80% (option a), 97% and 90% (option b) and 99% and 97% (option e).

#118 - Diagnosis of botulismo of cattle in Brazil by micro-complement fixation

Abstract in English:

The heat induced micro-complement-fixation test was used for the laboratory diagnosis of botulism in cattle. The following specimens were collected in southeastem and central-westem Brazil: Thirty six samples of blood serum, liver and rumen liquid from 23 bovines with clinical signs of botulism (a condition commonly called "doença da vaca caída" - fallen cow disease) and from 1 bovine inoculated subcutaneously with botulinum type C toxin. Samples of blood serum, liver and rumen liquid collected from healthy bovines were used as negative controls. Sixteen out of 17 serum samples were positive for botulinum toxin in cattle with clinical signs of acute, subacute and chronic botulism. All 9 liver samples were positive including those from chronic cases. Two samples of rumen liquid from bovines with the acute disease gave a positive test, but 2 other chronic cases were negative. All 3 samples collected from the bovine with subacute clinical sigos gave positive results. From 36 samples examined, 31 were positive; of these 2 were of type C, 5 type D and 24 samples had to be grouped within the CD complex. All samples gave negative results with the mouse bioassay, including the material collected from the experimental case. In conclusion at least one sample of each of the 24 cases examined gave a positive result for botulinum toxin; thus this highly sensitive test confirmed the diagnosis that the "doença da vaca caída" is indeed botulism, caused by type C and D toxins.

#119 - Ketosis in pregnant beef cows

Abstract in English:

Six outbreaks of ketosis in beef cattle are described. The disease occurred during winter, in cows in good to fatty conditions in the last 3 months of gestation, submitted to variable periods of food shortage. The animals showed constipation, incoordination, staggering and excitability followed by recumbency and death after 3 to 7 days. At necropsies the only significant alteration was a fatty degeneration of the liver. The outbreaks were controlled by nutritional measures.

#120 - Behavioral study of the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus (Chiroptera) related with the attack rate on cattle in captivity

Abstract in English:

The objective of this study was to determine the attack rate of vampire bats, Desmodus rotundus (Geoffroy, 1810), on cattle kept in captivity. It was observed that the bats returned to wounds previously made by them, but without a rigorous pattern of repetition. Abstract in Portuguese:
