#1 - Clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical characterization of spontaneous neoplasms in pet rodents in Northeastern Brazil

Abstract in English:

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the demand for small rodents such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, and mice to be kept as pets. Consequently, the veterinary care provided to these animals has also increased. The aim of this study was to describe gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings of 26 spontaneous neoplasms diagnosed in 25 pet rodents in Northeastern Brazil. A retrospective study was carried out from 2014 to 2022 in two veterinary diagnostic laboratories to identify cases of tumoriform lesions in these species. Hamsters represented the most frequent species in this study (60%, 15/25), followed by rats (28%, 7/25), guinea pigs (8%, 2/25), and mice (4%, 1/25), with a mean age of 17.63 months. The anatomical regions of the face/head and thoracic region were the most affected. The most affected tissues were the skin/subcutaneous/mucosal (65%, 15/26) and mammary gland (23%, 6/26). Eighteen different types of neoplasms were diagnosed, and T-cell lymphomas and mammary adenocarcinomas were the most diagnosed tumors, each corresponding to 12% (3/26) of the cases. Leiomyosarcoma, myxosarcoma and mammary adenocarcinoma metastases were also noted. Immunohistochemistry was essential for the diagnosis of certain malignant mesenchymal and round-cell neoplasms. Pet rodent neoplasms in Northeastern Brazil are common, especially in hamsters, and immunohistochemistry can be a useful tool for the definitive diagnosis of these tumors.

ABSTRACT.- Koproski L. & Pachaly J.R. 2017. [Chemical restraint of the Amazon Bamboo Rat (Dactylomys dactylinus Desmarest, 1817) and of the occurrence of the species in southern Brazil.] Postal 48, Recife, PE 52061-031, Brazil. E-mail: leticia@triade.org.br One subadult healthy free-living female Amazon Bamboo Rat (Dactylomys dactylinus), weighting 0.32 kg, received tiletamine HCl, zolazepam HCl, xilazine HCl and atropine sulfate, combined in a single intramuscular injection. All doses were calculated by interspecific allometric scaling, using as model a 10.0 kg domestic dog (tiletamine/zolazepam -5.0mg/kg), xylazine -1.0mg/kg), and atropine - 0.05mg/kg). Immobilization occurred in 2.3 minutes after injection (MAI) and returno to normal ambulation was observed in 135 MAI. Heart rate remained between 360 and 188 beats/minute (226±62), respiratory rate between 128 and 112 breaths/minute (120±5), and body temperature ranged from 36.2 to 33.5°C (34.4±1.0). Analgesia and myorelaxation were considered good for painless or mild painful fast procedures as physical examination, biological sampling, biometrics, imaging tests and tagging. The proposed anesthetic protocol was safe and effective, allowing safe manipulation of the animal during 63 MAI. The recovery was satisfactory, but prolonged. This is the first record of the species in Southern Brazil and the first report on its chemical restraint.

Departamento de Cirurgia, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, Avenida Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: phelipe.favaron@yahoo.com.br The aim of this study was to describe the skeletogenesis in punaré (Thrichomys laurentinus). We used 11 embryos and 12 fetuses in different stages of development, allocated into 4 groups. Samples were obtained from the Multiplication Center of Wild Animals, at Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid, Mossoro/RN, Brazil. After fixed in formalin (10%) or glutaraldehyde (2.5%) the morphological analysis was performed with a magnifying glass, and the macroscopic characteristics were photographed. Analysis of X-rays and alizarin red staining was made to better understand the development of bone structures. In x-ray analysis, it was possible to verify that the embryos showed no radiopacity, unlike fetuses that had gradual radiopacity along of the groups. In group II, there was an increase in radiopacity in the spine, mandibular and maxillary regions. In group III, the radiopacity was increased in the hind limbs, ribs and in the frontal region, and group IV showed higher radiopacity in the thoracic limbs and occipital, temporal and frontal skull. These characteristics were confirmed by histological and alizarin red analysis. We concluded that the knowledge of normal skeletal embryology is critical for understanding of adverse effects caused by nutrition and use of drugs during the development.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Silva F.M.O., Alcantara D., Carvalho R.C., Favaron P.O., Santos A.C., Viana D.C. & Miglino M.A. 2016. Development of the central nervous system in guinea pig (Cavia porcellus, Rodentia, Caviidae). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 36(8):753-760. Departamento de Cirurgia, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: fernanda_fmos@hotmail.com This study describes the development of the central nervous system in guinea pigs from 12th day post conception (dpc) until birth. Totally, 41 embryos and fetuses were analyzed macroscopically and by means of light and electron microscopy. The neural tube closure was observed at day 14 and the development of the spinal cord and differentiation of the primitive central nervous system vesicles was on 20th dpc. Histologically, undifferentiated brain tissue was observed as a mass of mesenchymal tissue between 18th and 20th dpc, and at 25th dpc the tissue within the medullary canal had higher density. On day 30 the brain tissue was differentiated on day 30 and the spinal cord filling throughout the spinal canal, period from which it was possible to observe cerebral and cerebellar stratums. At day 45 intumescences were visualized and cerebral hemispheres were divided, with a clear division between white and gray matter in brain and cerebellum. Median sulcus of the dorsal spinal cord and the cauda equina were only evident on day 50. There were no significant structural differences in fetuses of 50 and 60 dpc, and animals at term were all lissencephalic. In conclusion, morphological studies of the nervous system in guinea pig can provide important information for clinical studies in humans, due to its high degree of neurological maturity in relation to its short gestation period, what can provide a good tool for neurological studies.

#5 - Character transformations and their functional significance as a key to the evolution of hystricognath Rodentia, 31(12):1108-1115

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Mess A. 2011. Character transformations and their functional significance as a key to the evolution of hystricognath Rodentia. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 31(12):1108-1115. Department of Research, Museum of Natural History, Humboldt-University Berlin, Invalidenstr. 43, D-10115 Berlin, Germany. E-mail: drandrmss@aol.com Hystricognathi represent a monophyletic taxon within Rodentia. Since phylogenetically analyzed morphological systems are essential for revealing evolutionary processes, this study identifies evolutionary character transformations on the stem lineage of Hystricognathi as derived from the author’s own work and the literature. Data so far indicate that evolutionary transformations in the rostral head region, the loss of tactile ability in the outer nasal skin and the mobile arrangement of the associated cartilage, were allied with a switch from omnivorous to herbivorous and fiber-rich nutrition. Additional character transformations in the skull assist in digesting such food. Structures associated with reproduction and placentation show a remarkable proportion of derived character conditions: the chorioallantoic placenta has a ring-shaped organization and growth structure which optimizes the capacity for passive diffusion, a subplacenta occurred as a specialized region responsible for placental invasion and the inverted yolk sac facilitates substance exchange with the main placenta. Finally, precocial newborns evolved as a derived condition within Rodentia. All things considered, a mode of reproduction is indicated, which does not demand excessive additional energy intake by the mother and is in accordance with her low energetic diet. Hystricognathi possess major character transformations that represent prerequisites for their successful radiation at the time when more open ecosystems and grasslands evolved during Earth history. The analysis resulted in the reconstruction of a life-near picture of the hystricognath stem species pattern with high explanatory power in terms of changes in space and time and their interdependence with biodiversity.

Bento Gonçalves 9090, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. E-mail: gisele.stein@ufrgs.br The hematological profile was determined in three populations of Ctenomys lami that inhabits three different areas nominated as A and B, affected by cattle production, and C, without human impact, all of them in southern Brazil, under the same geologic formation. Sixty two individuals were collected. The packed cell volume (PCV) values, hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell (RBC) count presents statistic significant differences between males and females. PCV and Hb values were lower in comparison with other subterranean rodents, which could be related to the food searching behavior or soil characteristic of the species. Significant statistic differences were found to for Hb, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and lymphocytes between animals belonging to A and C areas. The PCV values were higher for animals from areas A and B, with significance only between A and C. Some of these alterations may suggest a modification on stress levels of the animals inhabiting areas A and B with anthropic alterations, or maybe just an inherited characteristic. Significant statistic differences were found either in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) between A and C areas, and platelets between A and B areas. No Kurloff cells were observed in the blood smear from analyzed individuals. The hematological values founded for Ctenomys lami are an important information for this species, which can be used for future research and management.
