#1 - Outbreaks of philophthalmiasis in ostriches (Struthio camelus) in Northeast Brazil

Abstract in English:

This study discusses the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological characteristics of two outbreaks of ocular infection in ostriches (Struthio camelus) caused by the trematode Philophthalmus sp. The outbreaks occurred in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte in Northeast Brazil. Ostrich farming was categorized as semi-intensive farming with free access to the weir and river. The clinical symptoms for infection included nictitating membrane inflammation, epiphora (tearing), eyelid edema, ocular congestion, eyeball destruction, emaciation, and death, and the infection period ranged from 8 to 16 months. Macroscopically, thickening of the eyelids and conjunctiva were observed, with orange parasites infestation. Histologically, the lesions were characterized as lymphoplasmacytic and heterophilic, multifocal to coalescing, moderate, chronic conjunctivitis associated with hyperplasia and ectasia of the Harderian gland, and numerous parasites. The parasites were oval and flattened with an oral suction cup, acetabulum, and thick cuticle containing spicules. The diagnosis of philophthalmiasis was based on epidemiological, clinical, and pathological findings associated with the morphological characteristics of the parasites present in the conjunctival sacs which were similar to the trematode Philophthalmus sp. Philophthalmiasis can occur in ostriches raised on urban and rural properties in Northeastern Brazil, probably associated with the contact of birds with contaminated water, and is characterized by severe conjunctivitis that can result in the loss of the eyeball and death of the animals.

E-mail: marceloabidu@gmail.com The mesenteric arteries of birds are important for the irrigation of the digestive tract and are associated with weight gain and food conversion. This study aimed to describe the origins, skeletopy, measures and main branches of cranial and caudal mesenteric arteries in ostriches. Forty-one cadavers of ostrich chicks, 23 males and 18 females, obtained from a farmer after natural death. The cadavers were fixed with 10% formaldehyde solution and their vascular system was filled with colored Petrolatex® S-65. The cranial and caudal mesenteric arteries and its proximal branches were dissected in situ and measured with a digital caliper. The mesenteric artery had an average length of 3.68cm±1.04 and emerged from the descending aorta at the level of the eighth thoracic vertebra in most cases; it branched into jejunal and ileocecal arteries. The jejunal artery sent a mean of 14 (14.04±2.08) branches to the jejunum. The ileocecal artery sent a rectal branch and another branch that irrigated ileum, cecum and rectum. In a male specimen the ileocecal artery was originated from the celiac artery. The caudal mesenteric artery emerged in the terminal portion of the descending aorta predominantly at the level of the 4th and 6th sacrocaudal vertebrae. Near the caudal end of the kidney it issued the cranial and caudal branches. The first irrigated the rectum and anastomosed with the rectal branch of the cranial mesenteric artery; the second irrigated the final part of the rectum, cloaca and cloacal bursa. There was no significant difference (p<0.05) between measurements, skeletopy and number of branches of the arteries between genders.

#3 - Morphologicals characteristics of the ostrich eggshell, 32(1):96-98

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Gamba J.P., Sabino N.S.C., Garcia Neto M. & Souza W.M. 2012. [Morphologicals characteristics of the ostrich eggshell.] E-mail: juliana_gamba@yahoo.com.br Morphological analysis of the ostrich eggshell is important because several factors can be related to morphological hatchability of eggs of this species in Brazil. Therefore, 60 samples of apparently normal eggs were analyzed (eggs hatched and with embryonic death). The observations were allowed to establish that: the average thickness of the eggshell, the porosity of the shell of the eggs, and correlate these variables with hatchability. The results were statistically analyzed by Duncan’s test, which showed that eggs with less porosity also have a lower hatchability. The average porosity of hatched eggs is 19.87 pores/cm2, and of eggs with embryonic death is pores/cm2 16.78. There was no statistical difference between the thickness of the shell in the regions studied, no interaction between viability and the regions studied.

Eight days before the onset of clinical signs, a commercial cattle concentrate containing monensin (177ppm) was introduced in the diet of the animals. Three horses showed difficulty moving, cramping, sweating and permanent recumbency, and death within 48 hours. Three ostriches showed sternal permanent recumbency or sluggish and reluctance to move. Two ostriches died 15 and 30 days after the onset of signs. Gross changes in the horses included multifocal myocardial pallor, endocardial and epicardial hemorrhages mainly around the coronary vessels, and bilateral yellowish white foci in skeletal muscles. Histological lesions were necrotic myopathy and cardiomyopathy. At necropsy of ostriches, skeletal muscles were diffusely pale with multiple small white spots, which corresponded to polyphasic segmental necrosis and regenerative changes.

#5 - Gross anatomical features of the oropharyngeal cavity of the ostrich (Struthio camelus), 31(6):543-550

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Tivane C., Rodrigues M.N., Soley J.T. & Groenwald H.B. 2011. Gross anatomical features of the oropharyngeal cavity of the ostrich (Struthio camelus). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 31(6):543-550. Departamento Pré-Clinico, Faculdade de Veterinária, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Avenida de Moçambique, Km 1.5, Maputo, Mozambique. E-mail: catarina.tivane@uem.mz Most descriptions of the ostrich oropharynx and oesophagus are superficial and supply little meaningful morphological data. The aim of this investigation is describe the ostrich oropharingeal cavity, in order to supply the deficiency of macroscopic data about this important animal. Five heads of 12 to 14-month-old ostriches of either sex were anatomically dissected to expose the oropharynx. The ostrich oropharynx was “bell-shaped” composed by the maxillary and mandibular ramphoteca. The roof and floor presented two distinct regions different in colour of the mucosa. The rostral region was pale pink contrasting to creamy-pink coloured caudal region. The median longitudinal ridge extended rostrally from the apex of the choana to the tip of the beak in the roof and it is clearly more prominent and rigid than the homolog in the floor that appeared thin and stretched rostrally, continuing caudally surrounding the tongue and the laryngeal mound eventually merging with the oesophageal mucosa. The floor was formed by the interramal region, tongue and laryngeal mound containing shield-shaped glottis. It can be concluded that the present study, in addition to confirming the basic features of the oropharynx previously described for the ostrich, clarified the contradictory information presented in the literature and also provided new, unreported morphological data, some of which may be important when studying nutrition and health in these birds.

The corpuscles are composed of an outer core, inner core and central nerve terminal. The outer core presents numerous lamellae, while the inner core shows compact structure of cytoplasm sheets. The corpuscles are elongate or oval in shape and are surrounded by bundles of collagen fibers. Each lamella is composed of a dense network of thick fibrils. The terminal axons are located along the axis and form a bulb terminal. The fibers of external core stained by Picrosirius and examined by polarized light microscopy revealed to be green in color like type I collagen fibers, and at the periphery is a large amount of collagen type III. The corpuscles are surrounded by flat cells and dense collagen fibers at the periphery.
