E-mail: kellyroballo@gmail.com Cell therapy represents an old therapeutic practice initiated with the transfusion of whole blood in different clinical situations. There is now a breakthrough in the study of multipotent stem cell therapy because of its functionality in regeneration of tissues, which promotes attention of the scientific community. Bone marrow is one of the main sources of multipotent stem cells, composed by hematopoietic stem cells responsible for the renewal of the cellular components of the blood, and mesenchymal stem cells that aid in the regeneration of tissues. These cells have a strong potential for the treatment of several diseases, due their main characteristics such as high plasticity, capacity for self-renewal and immunomodulation. Although, there are many studies that show good results with the use of cell therapy as a form of treatment for several diseases, some studies still show inconclusive or unsatisfactory results. Therefore, the objective of this study was to review the application of bone marrow stem cells in the canine model since improvements on the knowledge of the technique are necessary to enable its applicability with safety and efficacy.

Department of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Animal Science and Food Engineer, University of Sao Paulo, Av.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Caldas A.A., Brito M.F., Prado J.S., Yamasaki E.M., Veronezi L., Jönck F., Maia D.S. & Tokarnia C.H. 2012. [Experimental poisoning by Metternichia princeps (Solanaceae) in sheep and cattle.] Projeto Sanidade Animal Embrapa/UFRRJ, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. E-mail: tokarnia@ufrrj.br Metternichia princeps, had been shown responsible for deaths of goats on a farm in Itaguaí county, state of Rio de Janeiro. Its toxicity was proved by experiments in goats and rabbits. In the present study sheep and cattle were shown also to be sensitive to poisoning by the leaves of M. princeps. The lowest lethal dose was 10g/kg for sheep, and 20g/kg for cattle. The clinical signs of the poisoning were little specific. The course of the experimental poisoning varied from 6h4min to 99h in sheep, and from 4h46min to 75h30min in cattle. The most important findings at postmortem examination in the experimental animals were excessive cavitary fluid accumulation and edemas, especially of the perirenal tissue (present in 4 of 6 sheep, and in 2 of 3 cattle). The most important microscopic lesion was coagulative necrosis of the uriniferous tubules in the renal cortex (found in 8 of 9 cattle, except in one in which the course of poisoning was very short, but in all 6 sheep). In 5 of 6 sheep a diffuse swelling of the hepatocytes was found, a change not seen in cattle.

#3 - Spontaneous and experimental poisoning by the leaves and fruits of Erythroxylum deciduum (Cocão) in sheep in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, 31(3):213-218

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Borelli V., Lentz D., Veronezi L.O., Silva T.C.E., Kaufer L., Traverso S.D. & Gava A. 2011. [Spontaneous and experimental poisoning by the leaves and fruits of Erythroxylum deciduum (Cocão) in sheep in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil.] E-mail: a2ag@cav.udesc.br A disease in sheep with seasonal occurrence in the municipalities of Rancho Queimado and Ponte Alta do Sul, State of Santa Catarina, characterized by nervous manifestations and rapid death is described. The disease was reproduced experimentally in sheep giving the leaves of Erythroxylum deciduum collected in summer, at lethal doses from 10g/kg on. In one experiment in sheep with the fruits, the dose of 15g/kg was lethal. The onset of symptoms occurred within 2 hours after administration of the leaves, and the poisoning had a course from 10 minutes to 18 hours. Doses up to 20g/kg of leaves collected in winter caused slight signs of poisoning in two sheep. In the experiments, the clinical signs were depression and somnolence, and when the animals were moved, motor incoordination, imbalance, falls, difficulty to get up, and station with open legs; intense salivation, regurgitation, bruxism, increased heart rate and breathing was also observed. The clinical signs and death were exacerbated when the sheep were moved. The animals that died by the spontaneous and experimental poisoning did not show important gross lesions or microscopic alterations. It was concluded that the cut of the tree, allows growth of sprouts from the stems, encouraging the sheep to eat the plant. This fact and the availability of ripe fruits that fall off the trees can be made responsible for the poisoning with nervous signs of sheep, which occurs during the summer months in the state of Santa Catarina.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Furlan F.H., Lucioli J., Veronezi L.O., Traverso S. D. & Gava A. 2008. [Experimental poisoning by Sida carpinifolia (Malvaceae) in cattle.] E-mail: a2ag@cav.udesc.br Clinical and pathological findings of experimental poisoning by Sida carpinifolia in cattle are described. A neurologic disease was observed in cattle on farms of the Alto Vale do Itajaí region of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. For the experimental reproduction of the disease, fresh green leaves, weekly harvested in the same region where spontaneous case occurred, were force-fed to five cattle at doses of 10 and 20g/kg for 120 days, 40g/kg for 30 days, and 30 and 40g/kg body weight for 150 days. One animal died and the others were euthanatized at the end of the experiment. Clinical signs and lesions varied from mild to severe in the experimentally poisoned cattle and depended on dose and length of the period of consumption. Main histological and ultrastructural lesions consisted of vacuolation and distension of neuronal perikarya (mainly of Purkinje cells), and of the cytoplasm of acinar pancreatic cells and thyroid follicular cells. It is concluded that ingestion of even small amounts S. carpinifolia for prolonged periods of time cause lisosomal storage disease in cattle.
