#1 - Seropositivity and risk factors for leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and neosporosis in the canine population of Paraiba state, northeastern Brazil

Abstract in English:

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of seropositive animals for Leptospira spp., Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in dogs from Paraiba state, northeastern Brazil, and to identify risk factors. A total of 1,043 sera were sampled from dogs from five urban centers considered as regional poles: João Pessoa, Campina Grande, Patos, Sousa and Cajazeiras. For the serological diagnosis of Leptospira spp. infection the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was used, and for detecting anti-T. gondii and N. caninum antibodies the indirect fluorescent antiboy test (IFAT) was carried out. Ninety-seven dogs showed anti‑Leptospira spp. agglutinins, resulting in a frequency of 9.3% (95% CI=7.5; 11.1%). The most frequente serovars were Icterohaemorragiae (47.4%), Copenhageni (16.5%), Bratislava (11.3%), Canicola (10.3%) and Pomona (6.2%). The seropositivities for T. gondii and N. caninum were 22.1% (231/1043; 95% CI=19.6; 24.7%) and 7.7% (80/1043; 95% CI=6.1; 9.3%) respectively. Age >48 months (OR=2.92), mixed breed (OR=1.94) and access to street (OR=1.57) were identified as risk factors for Leptospira spp. infection. For toxoplasmosis, the categories age >48 months (OR=1.74), homemade food (OR=2.24), comercial and homemade food (OR=2.34) and contact with cats (OR=1.57) were considered risk factors, while access to street (OR=2.62) was risk fator for N. caninum. We conclude that dogs from five urban centers in Paraiba state are exposed to Leptospira spp., T. gondii and N. caninum infections, evidenced by antibody detection, as well as it is suggested a better feed management, control of outside home environment access and proper disposal of cat feces.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Rosa D.C., Garcia K.C.O.D. & Megid J. 2012. [Seropositivity for brucellosis in pigs in slaughter houses.] Soropositividade para brucelose em suínos em abatedouros. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 32(7):623-626. Departamento de Higiene Veterinária e Saúde Pública, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Distrito de Rubião Júnior s/n, Botucatu, SP 18618-970, Brazil. E-mail: jane@fmvz.unesp.br The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the seropositivity for brucellosis in pig slaughterhouses. Sera of 910 pigs from 30 farms and slaughtered at slaughterhouses, located in the central region of the state of São Paulo, were tested with Buffered Plate Acidified Antigen (BPAA) and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-Me) as confirmatory test to determine the serological positivity in this species. The results demonstrated that 25 (2.7%) of the pigs from 10 farms reacted to BPAA, corresponding to 36% of positive properties. From BPAA positive animals 16% and 52% presented titers of 25 incomplete and 25 respectively in the Tube agglutination test (TAT), 8% presented 50 and 25 incomplete, respectively, in TAT and 2-ME, and 8% resulted 50 and 25 positive in TAT and 2-ME, respectively. These results demonstrate the high percentage of positive farms for swine brucellosis in this region and reinforce the need for official and effective program implementation for the swine brucellosis control.

#3 - Neospora caninum seropositivity in cattle breeds in the South Fluminense Paraíba Valley, state of Rio de Janeiro, p.29-32

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Munhoz A.D., Pereira M.J.S., Flausino W. & Lopes C.W.G. 2009. Neospora caninum seropositivity in cattle breeds in the South Fluminense Paraíba Valley, state of Rio de Janeiro. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(1):29-32. Departamento de Parasitologia Animal, Instituto de Veterinária, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. E-mail: lopescwg@ufrrj.br The infection by Neospora caninum of different cattle breeds in dairy properties in two municipalities of the South Fluminense Paraíba Valley, state of Rio de Janeiro, was evaluated. Considering a sampling universe of 2,491 cows, blood samples were collected from 563 dairy cows in 57 farms, which were randomically selected in proportion to the number of animals, using a random stratified sampling system. For each property the number of selected cows was proportional to the herd size. Abortion or other reproductive disorders were not considered as criteria for selecting the animals, and seropositivity was determined by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A high association (p=0.006) between seropositivity and racial patterns was found. The analysis revealed that in comparison of pure black-and-white Holstein cows versus Zebu (p=0.0028), Holstein cows showed 2.65 times greater odds for seropositivity. In the same way, by comparing black-and-white Holstein versus Zebu + crossbreed Zebu/Holstein (p=0.01), it was noted that there is 2.23 times more chance for seropositivity in Holstein cattle. There were no significant differences concerning the comparison of Holstein cattle versus crossbreed Zebu/Holstein (p=0.08) or Zebu versus crossbreed Zebu/Holstein (p=0.11). This study supports the hypothesis that there is a close association between cattle breeds and the frequency of infection by N. caninum.
