Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Santos C.E.P. dos, Santurio J. M. & Marques L.C. 2011. [Pythiosis of livestock in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil.] E-mail: carloseduardo@ufmt.br An epidemiological study (2009-2010) included cattle and horses affected with pythiosis from farms in Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The disease occurred predominantly from November to March annually, period of the local rainy season. The mean annual incidence of pythiosis was 0.22% and 12.5% in cattle and horses, respectively. In cattle, the case distribution occurred during the peak of the floods and was restricted to 6 to 18 months of age heifers. Mild perilesional edema and lameness evolved to spontaneous resolution within until 90 days. In horses, pythiosis affected animals of both sexes with 3 to 8 years of age. Reinfection afflicted one horse. The lesions evolved to extensive granulation tissue and ‘kunkers’ in horses that experienced marked cachexy. Death occurred three to seven months after the beginning of symptoms. The mean mortality rate was 5.88% and the case fatality rate was 45.45%. Diagnosis was confirmed by ELISA test, PCR, histopathology (HE and Grocott) and isolation of Pythium insidiosum. In the endemic area studied, the disease in cattle did not represent an economic impact; on the other hand, the majority of cases in horses progressed unsatisfactorily. The incidence of pythiosis in horses was 57.23 times the incidence recorded in cattle, with statistical significance. While environmental flooded conditions were the same, such difference might be associated with species susceptibility, behavior and management.

RESUMO.- Santos C.E.P. dos, Santurio J. M. & Marques L.C. 2011. [Pythiosis of livestock in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil.] A confirmação do diagnóstico incluiu ELISA-teste, PCR, histopatologia (HE e Grocott) e isolamento de P. insidiosum.

E-mail: agoliveira@nin.ufms.br Turgida turgida have been largely reported parasitizing Didelphis species in North and South America based on light microscopy observation. However, the features that differentiate T. turgida from other physalopterid species should be observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A female white-bellied opossum, Didelphis albiventris, arrived dead at the Centro de Reabilitação de Animais Silvestres (CRAS) in the municipality of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. During the necropsy, adult nematodes were collected from stomach and intestine. The nematodes were determined to be adult specimens and submitted to SEM for the species determination. This is the first report of T. turgida confirmed by SEM in the Neotropical region and the first report in an urban area in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

ABSTRACT.- Souza R.I.C., Riet-Correa F., Barbosa-Ferreira M., Brum K.B., Fernandes C.E. & Lemos R.A.A. 2010. [Brachiaria spp. poisoning in cattle in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.] Postal 549, Campo Grande, MS 79070-900, Brazil. E-mail: carvalhomv6@hotmail.com The epidemiology, clinical signs and pathology of 29 outbreaks of spontaneous poisoning by Brachiaria spp. in beef cattle, which occurred from March 1996 to November 2009, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, were retrospectively studied. For this, the files of the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul were reviewed. Outbreaks occurred at different times of the year, including dry and rainy seasons. While photosensitization was the main clinical sign in cattle from 24 out of 29 outbreaks, in five of them the main clinical sign was progressive wasting, without photosensitization. Eleven outbreaks of photosensitization occurred in pastures of Brachiaria decumbens, two in mixed pastures of B. decumbens and B. brizantha, and one in B. brizantha. In 10 outbreaks the species of Brachiaria was not informed. Morbidity ranged from 0.2% to 50%, and fatality rates were between 44.4% and 100%. In cases of photosensitization brisket edema was the most frequent clinical sign observed. Dermatitis with thickened skin of the flank and perineal region, scar retraction of the ears, jaundice, ocular discharge, crusts in the eyes and ears, and ulceration of the ventral surface of the tongue were also observed. Nervous signs were observed in two cases and diarrhea in one. At necropsy the liver was enlarged, yellowish, with increased lobular pattern, and occasionally with depressed whitish areas. The kidneys were brownish and the urine dark. Upon histological examination of the liver the hepatocytes were swollen and vacuolized. Individual necrosis of hepatocytes, bile duct cell proliferation, biliary retention, and mild to moderate periportal fibrosis were also observed. In all cases foamy macrophages, most in groups, were observed mainly in the centrilobular region. In 21 cattle birefringent crystals were observed within the bile ducts. Five outbreaks of progressive wasting were observed in cattle grazing B. decumbens pastures. The main lesion was an enlarged yellowish liver. Histologic lesions were similar to those observed in cases of photosensitization. Birefringent crystals were observed in the liver of three cases, but foamy macrophages were found in all animals. It is concluded that B. decumbens is more toxic than B. brizantha and that the poisoning occurs at any time of the year. Nevertheless, research is still necessary to determine variations in the saponin content of Brachiaria species and the probable differences on susceptibility/resistance to the poisoning of cattle of different ages, breeds and from different regions.

Postal 549, Campo Grande, MS 79070-900, Brazil.

E-mail: thadeu@cpap.embrapa.br The expansion of the alcohol industry has led to the installation of ethanol plants in areas traditionally occupied by beef cattle in the Brazilian Midwest. Stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) outbreaks associated with alcohol plants have been reported in Nelore cattle in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in the last two years. Visits to livestock ranches and alcohol plants were held in mid-November 2009 at the end of S. calcitrans outbreaks in the counties of Angélica and Ponta Porã, MS. Interviews, surveys and collections of immature stages of flies were conducted at the sites and the entomological material was taken to the laboratory for further emergency. High stable fly infestations and cattle bunching behavior were observed during visits. Stable fly breeding sites were found and emergence of adult flies occurred from material collected from both cattle ranches and alcohol plants. The set of information, on-site observation, and sampling results made possible a preliminary epidemiological approach on the dynamics of S. calcitrans outbreaks as well as a discussion of potential risk factors.

#35 - Anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, 30(3):229-236

Abstract in English:

RESUMO.- Sczesny-Moraes E.A., Bianchin I., Silva K.F., Catto J.B., Honer M.R. & Paiva F. 2010. [Anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.]

E-mail: eurico_sczesny@hotmail.com Among the methods of control of gastrointestinal worms in sheep, the use of chemicals is the most common. However, the continued, and indiscriminate, use of these products has selected populations of resistant helminths to anthelmintics, a phenomenon reported in the whole world. This study aimed to identify the species of gastrointestinal parasites and diagnose the status of anthelmintic resistance in sheep in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul Brazil. Feacal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed in flocks of sixteen farms, and the seven formulations used contained the following pharmacological bases: Albendazole, Ivermectin, Levamizol, Trichlorfon, Moxidectin, Closantel and one containing the first three in association. The species identified at necropsy, in adult sheep, were: Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Cooperia curticei, C. punctata, C. pectinata and Oesophagostomum columbianum, in order of prevalence. The formulations containing Albendazole and Ivermectin did not show efficacy in reducing the EPG in the flocks tested, with average reductions of 0.7 and -19.6%, respectively. Closantel presented an average efficacy of 6.7%; Levamisolee, Moxidectin and Trichlorfon, 28.7, 26.8 and 65% respectively, the combination of three bases (Albendazole, Ivermectin and Levamizol), an average efficacy of 55.8 %. The average percentages of infective larvae recovered in the faecal cultures, pre and post treatment were similar, indicating that resistance to the bases tested is present in all species cited, to a greater or lesser degree. The two genera predominantly resistant are Haemonchus sp., with 86.9%, followed by Trichostrongylus sp., with an average of 47.5%, Strongyloides sp. 33.6%, Oesophagostomum sp. 21.4% and Cooperia sp. 19.7%.

The sample comprised 178 herds from 22 counties in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The risk factors associated with the presence of infeccion were investigated. A total of 2,573 blood serum samples were tested against 10 leptospira serovars using the microagglutination test (MAT). Titers of 100 or higher for one or more serovars were detected in 1,801 females (98.8%) from 161 herds (96.5%). Serovar Hardjo (65.6%) was the most frequent, followed by serovar Wolffi (12.3%). These results suggest that bovine leptospirosis is widespread in all the counties under study, with a high prevalence both at the animal and the herd level. Beef farms and the Zebu breed were associated to the higher risk of herd infection by leptospiras.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Ferreira L.C.L., Flores E.F., Driemeier D., Melo O. & Lemos R.A.A. 2008. [Mucosal disease associated with generalized dermatitis in cattle, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.] Senador Filinto Müller 2443, Campo Grande, MS 79070-900, Brazil. E-mail: eqrural@nin.ufms.br This paper reports epidemiological, clinical, pathological and laboratory diagnostic aspects of a form of dermatitis associated with mucosal disease (MD) in cattle. It also focuses on the methods used for identifying persistently infected (PI) animals and on the impact of the disease on fertility and weaning rates in the affected herd. Cases of dermatitis associated with MD were diagnosed in two 12 and 24-month-old Nelore calves belonging to a beef cattle farm that operates the full cycle of production (calving, rearing, finishing) in Mato Grosso do Sul, Midwest Brazil. The clinical signs exhibited by affected cattle 0included slow, progressive weight loss; formation of diffuse skin crusts in multiple body areas; skin dryness; multiple ulcerations on the gums and dorsal surface of the tongue which evolved to longitudinal fissures; formation of keratinized projections; and detachment of hoof horn. In addition, diarrhea affected one animal in the late stage of the disease. Necropsies also revealed longitudinal erosions in the esophagus. Histological examination showed coagulation necrosis foci in esophageal and lingual mucosae, with neutrophil and lymphocyte infiltration. Skin lesions consisted of epidermal coagulation necrosis associated with neutrophil infiltration and hyperkeratosis. In both cases, clinical diagnosis was confirmed by the isolation and identification of cytopathic and noncytopathic biotypes of the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and immunohistochemical detection of viral antigens in formalin fixed tissues. Out of 300 cattle that had contact with the affected animals, 38 were found to be seropositive - in high neutralizing titers - to BVDV. Blood samples from 1,025 young animals and 40 bulls from the farm were examined for the presence of BVDV to identify potential PI animals. The virus was isolated from blood of three calves in the initial test and, 12 months later, from two of them which had remained on the farm. Only one of these calves was found to be BVDV-positive by immuno-histochemical testing performed on ear-tissue samples. In the year following the birth of PI calves, the herd underwent decreases in fertility and weaning rates, which later returned to their previous levels. The resulting data demonstrate the presence of BVDV infection in beef herds in Mato Grosso do Sul and provide evidence as to include the disease in the differential diagnosis of causes of generalized dermatitis in cattle.

E-mail: moleta@ufmt.br Four outbreaks of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in cattle, which had contact with sheep, in Mato Grosso, Brazil, are described. In all cases, the animals had a clinical course of 4 to 7 days with no recovery. Two outbreaks occurred in the municipality of Cuiabá, the first in January 2006 with 8 cattle affected from a herd of 148, and the second in one out of 30 cattle in September 2006. The third outbreak occurred in April 2007 in the municipality of Rondonópolis, where 3 cattle died in a herd of 160. The fourth outbreak was in the municipality of Caceres in September 2007, where 2 out of 450 cattle were affected. The clinical signs were hyperthermia, intense lacrimation, nasal and oral discharge, corneal opacity, sialorrhea, oral, nasal and genital mucosal erosions, incoordination, depression and death. Necropsy findings in 4 animals were similar and consisted of lymph node swelling, and nasal, oral and esophagus erosion and ulceration. Histologically, arteritis and fibrinoid degeneration was observed in small arteries and arterioles, associated with epithelial necrosis in various organs and tissues. A nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) detected ovine herpes virus type 2 in frozen and paraffin embedded tissues in 3 cases.

E-mail: claudio.madruga@pq.cnpq.br Trypanosoma vivax outbreaks in beef cattle in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil, causes relevant economical impact due to weight loss, abortion and mortality. Cattle moved from the Pantanal to adjacent areas of this ecosystem for breeding and fattening is a common feature. Therefore an epidemiological study on breeding cows in the transition area between Pantanal lowland and adjacent highlands of Mato Grosso do Sul was performed to determine the T. vivax infection dynamics and outbreak risk. Three experimental groups were formed: Group 1 consisted of cows parasitologically negative by the Woo test and in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for T. vivax antibody detection (Tv-ELISA-Ab); Group 2 parasitologically negative and positive in the Tv-ELISA-Ab; and in Group 3 cows were parasitologically positive and with positive reactions in the Tv-ELISA-Ab. During 24 months, the cows’ dislodgment between the above established groups was monitored by Woo test and Tv-ELISA-Ab exams. The tabanid population was also monitored and the highest number occurred during the rainy season. Although parasitemias were detected only in the first four samplings of the experimental period, the cows could be considered as trypanotolerant, because no clinical signs were observed. Despite the higher T. vivax incidence during the dry season, no disease symptoms were seen. Even though T. vivax epidemiological situation in the herd was characterized as endemic with seasonal variation, the probability of outbreaks was null within the conditions of the study.
