#21 - Effect of calcium sources in the diets of adult cats on urinary parameters and acid-base balance

Abstract in English:

Calcium is a macroelement that is part of the mineral composition of the diet of companion animals, and is considered a cation of strong alkalizing power, increasing urinary pH. Calcium salts have different solubilities and depending on the anion to which calcium is associated with, it can be more or less absorbed, modifying the pH of the urine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of calcium sources on alkalinization of urinary pH, as well as excretion of urinary electrolytes and acid-base balance of adult cats. An extruded diet for cats was selected, and had 160mEq/kg of calcium from the sources of either calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or calcium gluconate (C12H22CaO14) added. In the control treatment there was no addition of calcium sources, resulting in three treatments. Nine adult cats were used, mixed breed, in two experimental periods, with six replicates per treatment. Animal average age was 4±1.3 years old and average weight was 3.96±0.71kg. The cats remained in metabolic cages for an adaptation period of seven days, followed by six days of urine total collection, with volume, density, pH and calcium concentration (g/d) measurements. The acid-base balance was studied by blood gas analysis of venous blood. The two sources of calcium alkalinized the urine (P<0.001). However, calcium gluconate had less alkalinization power compared to the calcium carbonate (P<0.05). Urinary calcium was not affected by treatments, and represented less than 0.5% of calcium intake. The experiment showed that calcium, although an alkaline cation and considered strong influencer of the EB of the diet, cannot be evaluated individually, because depending on its associated anion it may have greater or lesser influence on cats urine pH.

Abstract in Portuguese:

E-mail: viviam.babicsak@gmail.com This study aimed to determine age-related changes of the cerebral ventricles of healthy non‑brachycephalic domestic cats by the acquisition of brain MRI images of 12 adult (1 to 6 years), 11 mature (7 to11 years) and 10 geriatric (12 years or more) cats. Our hypothesis is that the cerebral ventricular system of cats expands with increasing age. The possibility of the evidence of the olfactory bulb cavities and temporal horns of the lateral ventricles were evaluated in this study. Volumes of the olfactory bulb cavities, lateral ventricles (including the temporal horns), third ventricle, mesencephalic aqueduct and fourth ventricle were measured and corrected for the intracranial volume. Significant differences were found between the adult and mature groups in relation to the geriatric one for the variable related to the evidence of the temporal ventricular horns, which were most frequently visualized in geriatric cats. Percentage of the right lateral and third ventricles volume by intracranial volume were significantly higher in geriatric cats compared to the adults. The results of this study demonstrate that ventricular dilation tends to occur with advancing age in cats, as well as the increase in the frequency of the temporal ventricular horn evidence, as had been indicated in the hypothesis of the study.

RESUMO.- Babicsak V.R., Klein A.V., Tsunemi M.H. & Vulcano L.C. 2018. Age-related changes of the cerebral ventricles of healthy domestic cats.

E-mail: c_adrianosl@hotmail.com The aim of this study was to standardize a multiplex PCR (mPCR) reaction to detect Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum and the Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex in dog and cat fur and/or crusts. 250 fur and/or crusts samples from dogs and cats were analyzed by direct examination and culture, DNA from them was extracted for mPCR. Primers were designed and the DNA extracted from colonies of M. canis (URM 6273), M. gypseum (URM 6921) and T. mentagrophytes (URM 6211) from the Collection of Cultures - URM Micoteca - Department of Mycology, Biological Sciences Center of the Federal University of Pernambuco (CCB / UFPE). As negative controls, sterile distilled water and DNA extracted from Alternaria sp., were used to verify the specificity of the primers. Of the total samples analyzed, 15 (6%) were identified in culture as dermatophytes, and of these, 10 were M. canis, three M. gypseum and two T. mentagrophytes (complex). Of these 15 positive samples, 11 (73.3%) were detected by mPCR. Besides these, six others, negative in culture, were identified as M. gypseum. There was good agreement between culture results and mPCR (Kappa: 0.66). The protocol standardized in this study can be used as a screening method, because it has a sensitivity greater than that of the culture, used in parallel to the routine exams, allowing a diagnosis in a shorter time.

#24 - Myelodysplasia in feline infectious peritonitis: 16 cases (2000-2017), 38(8):1638-1648

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Luz F.S., Mazaro R.D., Lorensetti D.M., Kommers G.D., Flores M.M. & Fighera R.A. 2018. [Myelodysplasia in feline infectious peritonitis: 16 cases (2000-2017).] Mielodisplasia na peritonite infecciosa felina: 16 casos (2000-2017). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 38(8):1638-1648. Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Av. Roraima 1000, Santa Maria, RS 97105-900, Brazil. E-mail: anemiaveterinaria@yahoo.com.br Although the prevalence of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is high worldwide, recent anatomopathological studies about this disease are scarce. Information on the microscopic characteristics of the bone marrow in FIP-affected cats are absent in the available literature. Based on this, the purpose of this article is to describe bone marrow lesions seen in spontaneous cases of FIP. The bone marrow collected systematically from the femoral diaphysis of 16 cats necropsied in the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology (LPV) of the Federal University (UFSM) of Southern Brazil, between January 2000 and June 2017, with a definitive diagnosis of FIP, were evaluated phenotypically (histopathology - hematoxylin and eosin and histochemistry - Perls stain) and immunophenotypically (immunohistochemistry using myeloid - Anti‑MAC387, and lymphocytic - Anti-CD79 αcy and Anti-CD3 markers). Regardless the following was observed the clinicopathological form of the disease (“dry” - noneffusive or “wet” - effusive): 1) myeloid hyperplasia; 2) erythroid hipoplasia; 3) megakaryocytic dysplasia (dismegakaryocytopoiesis); and 4) medullary plasmacytosis. Exclusively in cases of “dry FIP” was bone marrow and hepatic hemosiderosis. These lesions allowed establishing that cats with FIP develop myelodysplasia, a myeloproliferative lesion very similar to that reported in HIV-infected humans. It is suggested that, based on the findings described here, myelodysplasia is considered to be the main cause of hematological abnormalities observed in FIP, especially for non-regenerative anemia and thrombocytopenia, frequently developed by patients.

Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Av. Roraima 1000, Santa Maria, RS 97105-900, Brazil.

#25 - Mycobacteriae diagnosed in domestic cats in the backland of Paraiba, Brazil

Abstract in English:

This report describes two cases of domestic cats infected with Mycobacterium sp. in the backland of Paraiba, Northeast Brazil. The animals manifested nonspecific clinical signs, characterized by progressive weight loss, dyspnea, cough and generalized lymphadenomegaly in one cases, and clinical evolution of one and seven months respectively. Macroscopically the lesions were restricted to superficial and/or deep lymph nodes and pulmonary parenchyma, characterized by multifocal or multifocal to coalescent, yellowish and irregular nodules that presented multifocal areas with yellowish, friable and caseous as well as multifocal to coalescent, white and firm areas. Histologically, it was observed lymphadenitis and granulomatous pneumonia in both cases, varying in intensity of inflammatory response and degree of mineralization. The granulomas were constituted by macrophages and epithelioid cells, some with marked necrosis and central mineralization, surrounded by a large amount of connective tissue. In the first case there were also discrete and random granulomatous hepatitis. In both cases alcohol-acid-resistant bacilli were visualized inside the cytoplasm of macrophages in Ziehl-Neelsen staining; there was immunostaining for Mycobacterium sp. in the cytoplasm of macrophages. Through PCR was identified only the genus Mycobacterium in Case 1, and Mycobacterium bovis in Case 2. The diagnosis of Mycobacterium sp. In the cats was performed based on anatomopathological findings and immunohistochemistry. The PCR was performed the etiological diagnosis of mycobacteriosis in Case 1 and tuberculosis by M. bovis in Case 2. The diagnosis of diseases caused by mycobacteria in cats, especially those in which M. bovis was involved, is extremely important for public health highlighting the zoonotic potential of this species, since many infected animals may be asymptomatic or show nonspecific clinical signs.

#26 - Sporotrichosis in domestic felines (Felis catus domesticus) in Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis of subacute to chronic evolution, caused by the dimorphic and geophilic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. The zoonotic transmission has been highlighted, with domestic cats having an important epidemiological role in the disease. This research aimed to diagnose cases of sporotrichosis in domestic cats treated in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ, as well as to correlate the positive cases with the clinical signs observed in them, as well as risk factors such as sex, castrated animals or not, among other characteristics. One hundred domestic felines were used, with skin lesions suspected of sporotrichosis, which underwent a thorough clinical evaluation and completion of individual files. The lesions were then selected for material collection in sterile swabs and subsequent laboratory analysis, through cytology and fungal culture. Of the 100 animals analyzed, 66 (66%) were positive for Sporothrix spp., Being 46 (69.6%) uncastrated males, 15 (22.7%) uncastrated females, 4 (6.06%) females castrated and 1 (1.5%) castrated male, 89.3% of whom had access to the street. Concerning the lesion topography and clinical status of the animals, 43 (65.2%) had focal lesions and 23 (34.8%) disseminated lesions, where 21 (31.8%) died or were submitted to euthanasia at the option of tutor. With the results of the exams, it was possible to adequately prescribe the therapeutic protocol and follow up of 40 animals (60.6%), and in the cases of the cats referred (7.5%), the respective veterinarian was informed of the respective diagnosis so that this To choose their therapeutic behavior.

Abstract in Portuguese:

#27 - Anaplasmataceae in cats (Felis catus) in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro

Abstract in English:

In Brazil, by the year 2000, rickettsioses in domestic cats were little known and there were only sporadic reports of Ehrlichia sp. Recent research involving molecular biology and rickettsioses confirm the notion of the presence of theses agents in cats and show the need for more studies in Brazil. The objective of this paper was to characterize agents belonging to the Anaplasmataceae family that affect domestic cats and to clarify the importance of cats in the epidemiology of rickettsioses by molecular and serological methods associating the presence of disease with clinical and laboratory parameters. Blood samples were obtained from 60 healthy domestic cats. Blood count and serum biochemical tests were performed, and the data were registered. The samples were processed to obtain cell concentration and serum to perform the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) respectively, in order to identify agents of the Anaplasmataceae family. The data were used for descriptive analysis to obtain frequencies and to perform non-parametric tests with the chi-square test (p≤5%), besides the laboratory findings of infection by Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma platys. The results revealed that 33.33% of the agents belonged to the Anaplasmataceae family, 8.33% for E. canis, 20% for A. platys, and 10% for A. phagocytophilum. Serology samples were examined by indirect immunofluorescence to check samples reacting to A. phagocytophilum, with positive reaction of 8.33%. The most frequent clinical and laboratory findings in patients positive for Anaplasmataceae agents were lethargy, enlargement of lymph nodes, pale mucous membranes, dehydration, thrombocytopenia, hyperglobulinemia and hypoalbuminemia. These data had non-parametric correlation and the laboratory changes and presence of positive cats was not interdependent. Identification of E. canis and A. platys revealed the disease in the region of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ. The presence of A. phagocytophilum is considered an important finding due to its zoonotic potential.

#28 - Complications observed in dogs and cats with neurological diseases

Abstract in English:

Dogs and cats with neurological diseases can show several sequelae and complications as a result of motor, sensory and visceral deficiencies. Some complications are an important cause of mortality, mainly complications related to spinal cord injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate in 100 dogs and cats brought to the Neurology Service of Veterinary Hospital from Universidade Estadual de Londrina the frequency of complications, epidemiology, lesion localization and etiology, still assessing the evolution and survival time. It was observed that 91% of the animals developed complications. The most frequent were muscular atrophy (n=32), urinary retention (n=24), urinary incontinence (n=24), fecal incontinence (n=17) and pressure sores (n=16). The main site of injury associated with the onset of complications was spinal cord (91%) and the main cause was the spinal cord trauma (37.3%). The median survival time of animals with complications was two months and the mean was seven months. The main causes of death or euthanasia were related do spinal cord trauma, traumatic brain injury or inflammatory/infectious disease. The estimated lifetime was lower for older and heavier animals. Although the survival rate of animals with complications was high, most of them remained with sequelae, indicating that survival does not mean normal functional capacity. Dogs and cats with neurological problems require a high degree of attention of the veterinarian and their guardians, and guidelines regarding the real expectation of recovery and management difficulties that may be encountered in the course of the disease are essential.

#29 - Radiographic assessment of the proximal tibial angles in dogs and cats with and without cranial cruciate ligament rupture

Abstract in English:

The influence of the proximal tibial angles in the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in dogs is still controversial, and little is known regarding this topic in cats. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the angles of the proximal portion of the tibia in dogs and cats with and without CCL rupture. Retrospective and prospective radiographs of the stifle joints were obtained and divided into four groups. Group 1 was composed of 70 stifle joint images of dogs without orthopedic disorders (healthy dogs), group 2 had 70 stifle joint images of dogs with CCL rupture, group 3 had 50 stifle joint images of cats without orthopedic disorders (healthy cats) and group 4 had 25 stifle joint images of cats with CCL rupture. Radiographs were taken with the stifle joint in the mediolateral projection, positioned at the angle of hind limb support. Between the two groups of dogs evaluated, the dogs with CCL rupture had statistically greater tibial plateau angle (TPA) compared with healthy dogs. No difference was shown in relation to the TPA between healthy cats and cats with CCL rupture. In relation to the patellar ligament angle by tibial plateau method the values for the healthy dogs were significantly higher than those for the CCL ruptured dogs. Similarly, healthy cats had significantly higher mean values than cats with CCL rupture. In the patellar ligament angle by common tangent method there was no significantly difference between the two groups of dogs. Between the two groups of cats, animals with CCL rupture had statistically higher mean values than healthy cats. In general, the groups of dogs showed higher mean values than the groups of cats. For the patellar ligament insertion angle (PLIA) healthy dogs showed a significantly higher mean than dogs with CCL rupture. There was no significant difference between the groups of cats. In conclusion, the TPA and the PLIA possibly influence the etiology of CCL rupture in dogs but not in cats. The low patellar ligament angle measured by common tangent method may favorably influence the reduced incidence of CCL rupture in cats.

#30 - Brain parenchymal changes during normal aging in domestic cats

Abstract in English:

This study aimed to identify changes related to brain parenchyma as advancing age in healthy domestic cats. Our hypothesis is that cats suffer cerebral and cerebellar atrophy and show focal changes in signal intensity of the brain parenchyma in accordance with the progression of age. Twelve adult (1 to 6 years), eleven mature (7 to11 years) and ten geriatric non-brachycephalic cats (12 years or more of age) underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There were no changes in signal intensity and contrast uptake in brain parenchyma of the cats. Geriatric animals showed significantly lower average thickness of the interthalamic adhesion and percentage of the cerebral parenchyma volume in relation to intracranial volume than those found in the adult group. No significant differences were found between groups for cerebral volume, cerebellar volume and percentage of cerebellar volume in relation to intracranial volume. The results of this study indicate that atrophy of the cerebral parenchyma, including the interthalamic adhesion, occurs with age in domestic cats, confirming the hypothesis of the study. However, the results did not corroborate the hypothesis that cats show cerebellar atrophy and focal changes in signal intensity of the brain parenchyma with advancing age.
