Departamento de Zootecnia, Instituto de Ciências Agrárias, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Avenida Universitária 1000, Montes Claros, MG 39404-547, Brazil. E-mail: rafaelzooufmg@gmail.com The objective was to evaluate the blood profile together with the relative and absolute size of the internal organs of calves in conventional or fractionated feeding system. Ten females were used, with an average initial body weight of 37.53 kg (±2.36), and 12 males with a mean body weight of 81.6 kg (±8.6), both Holstein breed. The conventional feeding consisted of four liter milk supplied daily for 54 days of evaluation, and fractioned six liter milk was given from 6 to 25 days of age, four liter from 26 to 45 days of ager, and two liter from 46 to 59 days of age. Cynodon sp. hay, water and mineral supplement was provided ad libitum. The experimental design was completely randomized with five replicates for blood parameters and six replicates for the development of internal organs. Blood collections were performed in females on days seven, 21, 28, 42, 49 and 56 of age. For the evaluation of internal organs males were slaughtered at two months of age, after 16 hours of fasting. No differences occurred in the values of total protein, albumin, globulin, creatinine, urea, cholesterol and β-hydroxybutyrate in ages evaluated (p>0.05). However, for the concentration of glucose no interaction was found between lactation systems and periods evaluated. It can be noted that at 21 days of age the concentration was higher in calves kept in the fractionated system, when compared with animals of the conventional group. The feeding system did not affect the final body weight, the empty body weight or the weight of the internal organs, except for the heart, demonstrating that the fractional feeding system does not alter the assessment of the internal organs.

ABSTRACT.- Araújo K.S.M., Nunes T.L., Oliveira M.G.C., Paiva A.L.C., Oliveira M.F. & Paula V.V. 2013. [Propofol use during anesthetic induction of Rheas (Rhea americana americana).] Postal 137, Presidente Costa e Silva, Mossoró, RN 59625-900, Brazil. E-mail: valeria@ufersa.edu.br Propofol is an intravenous anesthetic agent, which promotes rapid inductions and recovery as well, as limited toxicity. Despite its advantages, the dose and effects of such a drug on rheas has not been determined yet. This study aimed to evaluate the use of propofol in anesthesia induction of rheas, and to determine its dosage for the species. Twenty young male rheas were used, which were anesthetized with propofol administered intravenously. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (f), and cloacal temperature (TC) were measured before administration of propofol and soon after obtaining anesthesia. In those moments, venous blood was collected for hemogasimetric analysis. Interdigital pinch was held for evaluation of anesthesia, being determined, based on the response to the stimulus, the latency period as well as active period and anesthetic recovery. The dose able to induce anesthesia in rheas was 5mg.kg-1.The average HR, ƒ, TC levels were 138 bpm, 35rpm and 39.1°C, respectively; and after inducing the averages were 180 bpm, 25rpm and 40.6°C. Administration of propofol resulted in no significant changes in the values of oxygen partial pressure, base excess, bicarbonate, oxygen saturation, pH, and carbon dioxide partial pressure. The average induction time, active period of anesthesia and recovery time, in minutes, were respectively 2.48, 2.98 and 7.85. The dose of propofol found to rheas was compatible with those used for induction in other avian species. Propofol at a dose of 5 mg.kg-1 proved to be a safe drug for total intravenous anesthesia in rheas, enabling rapid induction and recovery from anesthesia in addition to promoting few changes in cardiorespiratory and blood gas in the species.

#14 - Productive systems of dairy goats in the semiarid of Paraiba: characterization, major limiting factors and evaluation of intervention strategies, 33(3):345-352

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Riet-Correa B., Simões S.V.D., Pereira Filho J.M., Azevedo S.S.A., Melo D.B., Batista J.A., Miranda Neto E.G. & Riet-Correa F. 2013. [Productive systems of dairy goats in the semiarid of Paraiba: characterization, major limiting factors and evaluation of intervention strategies.] Sistemas produtivos de caprinocultura leiteira no semiárido paraibano: caracterização, principais limitantes e avaliação de estratégias de intervenção. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 33(3):345-352. Hospital Veterinário, Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Av. Universitária s/n, Patos, PB 58700-970, Brazil. E-mail: saravilar@bol.com.br Through a multidisciplinary study, eight dairy goat farms from the semiarid of Paraíba were studied for a period of two years with the aim to identify the main limiting factors for milk production and to propose and evaluate intervention strategies. A questionnaire was used to obtain information about the farms and their herd management. The forage availabilities were evaluated and proposals were made for correction. The animals were identified to facilitate the zootechnical bookkeeping and the milk production control. The major diseases were diagnosed. Analysis of variance, multiple linear regression and t test were used for data analysis. The average animal numbers in the herds were 53 at the start of the first year, 62 in the end of the year, and 49 in the second year. None herd had a defined breed. In the first year, seven farms had forage deficiency during the dry season, but only two during the rainy season. In the second year, after technical advertisement, six farms still had forage deficiency during the dry season and only two during the rainy season; however in six farms the yearly forage production was adequate and storing fodder during the rainy season would prevent the deficit during drought. The average milk production per goat was 1.19 liters. The most inadequate goat facilities were those used to keep the goat kids. Zootechnical bookkeeping was originally not practiced in any farm at the start of the study, but it was gradually and partially established. The main diseases recorded were caseous lymphadenitis, subclinical mastitis, keratoconjunctivitis and contagious ecthyma. The prevalence of subclinical mastitis, caseous lymphadenitis and gastrointestinal parasitoses were reduced after technical assistance. Reproductive problems were reported in 75% of the farms. Four herds had goat kid mortality rates higher than those acceptable. After analyzing the data, it can be concluded that a continuous and multidisciplinary technical assistance may minimize the factors limiting dairy goat production. The study showed that farmers accept the new technologies if they are appropriate to the systems and are gradually implemented.

E-mail: marcio_medvet@hotmail.com Rheas are birds belonging to the ratites group and, among ostriches and emus, are the largest birds currently alive. In this work we studied the macroscopic aspects of rheas’ digestive tract in order to provide important information to a better understanding of these birds’ eating habits as well their anatomy. Twenty young animals aging between two and six months from the Centre for Wild Animals Multiplication (Cemas, scientific breeding license form Ibama no.1478912) were used. After dissection it was observed that their tongue was small and presented a rhomboid form, being disposed on the oral cavity floor, and inserted in its base by a frenulum. The esophagus was a rectilinear tube with elastic aspect and longitudinal elastic fibers, without dilation, which gives it an absence of crop. The proventriculus presented a fusiform form and the gastric ventricle showed and slightly oval form when filled, and was internally coated with a thick gastric cuticle. The small intestine was composed of three distinct regions: duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The duodenum had a light gray color and showed a “U” curved shaped. The jejunum was dark green, long and composed of several short loops arranged above each other. The ileum had a gray color and was connected with the jejunum. In ventral line to the rectum and cloaca, the ileum extended cranially, dorsally to the ascending duodenum. The large intestine was composed of two caeca, one right and one left, and colon-rectum and ileum were continuous with the cloaca. The structures of the rhea digestive tract resemble those described in the literature regarding to its shape and topography, even though rhea’s caeca are well developed and relatively long.

#16 - Vaccination protocol and bacterial strain affect the serological response of beef calves against blackleg, 30(7):554-558

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Araujo R.F., Curci V.C.L.M., Nobrega F.L.C., Ferreira R.M.M. & Dutra I.S. 2010. Vaccination protocol and bacterial strain affect the serological response of beef calves against blackleg. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(7):554-558. Departamento de Apoio, Produção e Saúde Animal, Curso de Medicina Veterinária, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Rua Clóvis Pestana 793, Bloco 37, Araçatuba, SP 16050-680, Brazil. E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br The serological response of beef calves was evaluated with different vaccination regimens against blackleg, using an official strain (MT) and a field-collected strain of Clostridium chauvoei as antigens. Sixty calves were randomly allocated to four different groups and were submitted to distinct vaccination protocols with a commercial polyvalent vaccine. Group G1 was first vaccinated at four months of age and a booster shot was given after weaning, at eight months. Group G2 was given the first dose at eight months and a booster shot 30 days later. Group G3 was vaccinated only once at eight months and the control group was not vaccinated. These alternative vaccination regimens were proposed in an effort to adequately protect cattle under open-field farming conditions. Serological evaluations were made by Elisa at 4, 8, 9 and 10 months of age. Both groups receiving booster shots had a significantly increased serological response 30 days later. However, the serum IgG levels against C. chauvoei were significantly higher in the calves that were first vaccinated at four months. At 10 months, the two booster shot groups (G1 and G2) had similar serological responses, while the calves that were treated with a single dose of vaccine at weaning (G3) had a response that was similar to that of the control group. The serological response of the calves was significantly inferior at several of the evaluation times when the field strain of the bacteria was used as a challenge antigen instead of the official MT strain. The serological response of calves that are vaccinated twice was found to be satisfactory, independent of the first injection being made at four or eight months of age. It was also concluded that it would be useful to include local bacterial strains in commercial vaccine production.

E-mail: jrmodolo@fmvz.unesp.br The study evaluated the anti-Toxplasma gondii antibodies occurrence in dairy goats in São Paulo State, and also verified likely associations with age, sex, presence of cats, occurrence of reproductive problems, and potential risks to public health. Serum was obtained from 923 animals of both sex, over three months of age from 17 properties in different cities. For the diagnosis, the indirect immunofluorescence reaction (RIFIe”16) and a questionnaire about health to collect epidemiological information and the reproductive cycle of every goat were used. Among all properties, 15 foci of T. gondii were diagnosed with seropositivity ranging from 2.70% to 81.25%. Neither association between the frequency of seropositivity and the sex of animals nor occurrence of reproduction failure of goats was identified. There was positive influence of anti-T. gondii antibody rate due to the older age of the animals and the presence of cats in pens. The risk of transmitting T. gondii to the public health must be considered, once in some properties where the positive serology was verified natural, products such as milk and/or meat are commercialized. Results were discussed at 5% level of significance.

The risk of transmitting T. gondii to the public health must be considered, once in some properties where the positive serology was verified natural, products such as milk and/or meat are commercialized. Results were discussed at 5% level of significance.

Abstract in English:

Malafaia P., Pimentel V.A., Freitas K.P., Coelho C.D., Brito M.F. & Peixoto P.V. 2003. [Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements.] E-mail: malafaia1@ig.com.br Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements were evaluated during 148 days in Seropédica county, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were daily fed with fresh and chopped Andropogon gayanus or Pennisetum purpureum; the concentrate ration was formulated without a mineral mixture and was offered together with the forage of 300 up to 500 g/animal/day. Sixteen goats were divided into two groups of 8 animals each (4 small and 4 larger goats). For one group a commercial mineral mixture was used, and to the other group a selective mineral mixture containing only Na, P and Cu was offered. The animals were weighed every 30 days and the mineral supplement intake was measured monthly. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and the end of the experimental period. There was no difference in daily weight gain when the selective or commercial mixture was given for both groups. The selective mineral supplementation was 2.3 (for the smaller animals) and 3.9 (for larger animals) times more economic than the conventional supplementation with a “complete” mineral mix. The two groups showed recovery of hair quality and had an increase of hair pigmentation around the eyes, which was attributed to the correction of copper deficiency. In the larger animals the intake of both supplements increased the red blood cells counts, and the haematocrit and haemoglobin values. The forage intake was sufficient to meet the Ca and Co needs of the animals, and for P the concentrate intake was sufficient to overcome the demand for this element. The requirement of zinc was supplied through the forage and the concentrate ration. Thus, when an adequate concentrate and a good quality forage is given, only the deficient mineral element(s) should be supplemented. In this specific case only Na and Cu should be given. The result of this experiment confirms the hypothesis that selective mineral supplementation – i.e. supplementation of the mineral element(s) deficient in the diet – was correct and can result in reduction of the cost with the mineral supplementation of a herd.

#19 - Prevalence of atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia in farms associated to swine integration systems in the State of Santa Catarina

Abstract in English:

A survey of the occurrence of atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia among finishing pigs at the slaughterhouse was conducted during the winter of 1985. The pigs were of various breeds, of both sexes, ranging in age from five and half to six and half months, originated from 133 herds. The herds were chosen randomly from five different integration systems. From 3,607 nasal conchae examined 52.6% were normal 31.4% were affected by grade 1 (slightly), 11.9% grade 2 (clearly atrophic) and 4.9% grade 3 (strongly atrophic). From 3,588 lungs examined 44.7% were normal and 44.9% showed hepatization of 0 < x < 11.0% (grade 2) of the lung volume, 7.6% with 11.0 ≦ x < 21.0% (grade 3) and 2.9% with x ≧ 21.0% (grade 4). Atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia were diagnosed in 100% of the farms. It was concluded that atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia were disseminated in the finishing pigs herds associated to the integration systems in the State of Santa Catarina.
