E-mail: rmtmed@uol.com.br This paper reports plant poisonings in ruminants and horses, diagnosed between 2000 and 2007, in the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory at the Federal University of Campina Grande, in the city of Patos, state of Paraíba. In cattle, 7.4% of the diseases diagnosed were caused by poisonous plants. Outbreaks were caused by Centhraterum brachylepis (1), Brachiaria spp. (1), Crotalaria retusa (2), Ipomoea batatas (1), Marsdenia sp. (1), grass containing nitrites (3 outbreaks, 1 by Echinochloa polystachya and 2 by Pennisetum purpureum), Palicourea aeneofusca (1), Prosopis juliflora (3), Nerium oleander (1), and Mimosa tenuiflora (7). In sheep, 13% of the diseases diagnosed were caused by toxic plants. Four outbreaks were caused by Ipomoea asarifolia, 3 by Brachiaria spp., 2 by Crotalaria retusa, 2 by Tephrosia cinerea, 1 by Panicum dichotomiflorum, 1 by Mascagnia rigida, and 20 by Mimosa tenuiflora. In goats, 6.4% of the diseases were caused by toxic plants. Seven outbreaks were caused by Mimosa tenuiflora, 1 by Ipomoea asarifolia, 1 by Ipomoea carnea, 1 by Ipomoea riedelli, 3 by Prosopis juliflora, 1 by Arrabidaea corallina, 2 by Aspidosperma pyrifolium, and 2 by Turbina cordata. In horses, 14% of the diagnosed diseases were due to plants poisonings including 12 outbreaks caused by Crotalaria retusa and one by Turbina cordata. Annual losses in the state of Paraíba by deaths of livestock are estimated in 3,895 cattle, 8,374 sheep, 6,390 goats, and 366 horses, which represent about US$ 1,380,000. Epidemiologic, clinical and pathologic aspects of poisonings by Crotalaria retusa in cattle, Brachiaria spp. in sheep, Prosopis juliflora in cattle and goats, Nerium oleander in cattle, Opuntia ficus-indica in goats, and Turbina cordata in horses and goats are reported.

E-mail: rmtmed@uol.com.br Foi realizado um levantamento dos surtos de intoxicações por plantas em ruminantes e equinos diagnosticados no Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária (LPV), do Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Campus de Patos, Paraíba, no período de 2000-2007. Em bovinos 7,4% dos diagnósticos realizados pelo LPV foram intoxicações por plantas. Foram diagnosticadas intoxicações por Centhraterum brachylepis (um surto), Brachiaria spp. (um surto), Crotalaria retusa (dois surtos), Ipomoea batatas (um surto), Marsdenia sp. (um surto), gramíneas contendo nitratos e nitritos (um surto por Echinochloa polystachya e dois surtos por Pennisetum purpureum), Palicourea aeneofusca (um surto), Prosopis juliflora (três surtos), Nerium oleander (um surto) e Mimosa tenuiflora (sete surtos). Na espécie ovina 13% dos diagnósticos foram intoxicações por plantas. Os surtos foram causados por Ipomoea asarifolia (quatro surtos), Brachiaria spp. (três surtos), Crotalaria retusa (dois surtos), Tephrosia cinerea (dois surtos), Panicum dichotomiflorum (um surto), Mascagnia rigida (um surto) e malformações associadas à ingestão de Mimosa tenuiflora (20 surtos). Nos caprinos, 6,4% dos diagnósticos corresponderam à intoxicação por plantas. Sete surtos foram causados por Mimosa tenuiflora, um por Ipomoea asarifolia, um por Ipomoea carnea, um por Ipomoea riedelli, três por Prosopis juliflora, um por Arrabidaea corallina, dois por Aspidosperma pyrifolium, dois por Turbina cordata e um por Opuntia ficus-indica. Na espécie equina 14% das doenças diagnosticadas foram devidas a intoxicações por plantas, sendo 12 surtos por Crotalaria retusa e um por Turbina cordata. As perdas na Paraíba por plantas tóxicas são estimadas em 3.895 bovinos, 8.374 ovinos, 6.390 caprinos e 366 equinos, que representam uma perda econômica anual, por morte de animais, de R$ 2.733.097,00. São relatados alguns aspectos epidemiológicos, sinais clínicos e patologia de surtos de intoxicação por Crotalaria retusa em bovinos, Brachiaria spp. em ovinos, Prosopis juliflora em bovinos e caprinos, Nerium oleander em bovinos, Opuntia ficus-indica em caprinos e Turbina cordata em equinos e caprinos.

[Paratuberculosis in goats and sheep in Brazil.] Paratuberculose em caprinos e ovinos no Brasil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(1):67-72. E-mail: franklin.riet@pq.cnpq.br This paper reports paratuberculosis in sheep and goats for the first time in Brazil. On Farm 1 in a flock of 33 goats and 13 sheep, one adult female goat presented progressive weight loss during about one year, and soft feces during one month before death. All the animals from the flock were submitted to the comparative tuberculin test. One sheep was positive to the avian tuberculin (2.2%) and in two the results were inconclusive. On Farm 2, in a flock of 200 sheep and 80 goats, one adult ewe presented progressive weight loss during about one year, and soft feces during 20 days before death. All sheep older than four months of age and 23 goats were submitted to tuberculin test with avian tuberculin; 47 (25.4%) sheep were positive, 115 (61.5%) had inconclusive results, and 25 (13.4%) were negative. No positive tuberculin test were observed in the goats, but in 11 (47.8%) the test was inconclusive and in 12 (52.2%) was negative. At necropsy both affected animals had enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. In the affected sheep, the gut wall was thickened and corrugated, mainly in the ileum and ileocecal valve. Histologically, granulomas with mainly foamy macrophages were observed in the lamina propria and submucosa of the gut, in mesenteric lymph nodes, and in the goat also in the liver. One tuberculin positive sheep and one tuberculin negative goat from Farm 1 were euthanized and necropsied. A mild thickened of the intestinal wall was observed grossly in both animals. Inflammatory infiltrate with mainly lymphocytes was observed on the submucosa and lamina propria of the gut. In the four cases acid-alcohol positive rods, positive for Mycobacterium spp. on immunohistochemical examination were observed in macro-phages and lymphocytes. New studies are necessary to know the prevalence and economical impact of paratuberculosis in goats and sheep in Brazil, to determine control measures, and to evaluate the risk of human transmission.

Na Fazenda 1, de um rebanho de 33 caprinos e 13 ovinos, uma cabra adulta apresentou emagrecimento progressivo por aproximadamente um ano e fezes pastosas um mês antes da morte. Todos os animais do rebanho foram tuberculinizados com a prova comparativa. Um ovino (2,2%) teve resultado positivo à tuberculina aviar e em dois o teste foi inconclusivo. Na Fazenda 2, com 200 ovinos e 80 caprinos, foi afetada uma ovelha adulta que apresentou emagrecimento progressivo por aproximadamente um ano e fezes pastosas por aproximadamente 20 dias. Todos os ovinos com mais de 4 meses de idade e 23 caprinos foram tuberculinizados com tuberculina aviar; em 47 (25,4%) o resultado foi positivo, em 115 (61,5%) inconclusivo e em 25 (13,4%) negativo. Entre as cabras não houve nenhuma positiva à tuberculina aviar, mas em 11 (47,8%) o teste foi inconclusivo e em 12 (52,2%) foi negativo. Na necropsia dos dois animais com sinais clínicos os linfonodos mesentéricos estavam aumentados de tamanho e edemaciados. O ovino afetado da Fazenda 2, apresentou espessamento e enrugamento da mucosa do intestino, principalmente no íleo e válvula íleo-cecal. Microscopicamente o caprino e o ovino com sinais clínicos apresentaram lesões semelhantes, caracterizadas por granulomas com predominância de macrófagos espumosos, na lâmina própria e submucosa do intestino e linfonodos mesentéricos. O ovino positivo à tuberculina e um caprino negativo na Fazenda 1 foram eutanasiados e apresentaram discreto espessamento da mucosa do íleo. Na histologia foi observado infiltrado preferentemente linfocítico. Em todos os casos dentro de macrófagos e linfócitos havia bacilos ácool-ácidos resistentes, positivos na imuno-histoquímica para Mycobacterium spp. Sugere-se a necessidade de estudar a prevalência de paratuberculose em rebanhos de caprinos e ovinos no Brasil, determinar medidas de controle e avaliar a possibilidade de transmissão para humanos.

E-mail: fonteque@cav.udesc.br The objective was to evaluate the electrophoretic profile of proteins and serum concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in Saanen goats with mastitis experimentally induced by Staphylococcus aureus (dl-a-tocopherol acetated). 14 adult goats, (supplemented with vitamin E DL-a-tocopherol) primiparous pregnant, seronegative for caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAEV), clinically healthy, were divided into two groups of seven animals: Not supplemented group (G1) and group supplemented with 2.000 UI of DL-a-tocopherol (G2 Vit E), by intramuscular injection on the day of the parturition and seven days later. At the 9th day after delivery 300 UFCs of the S. aureus ATCC 225923 strain were inoculated into the left half of the mammary gland of each animal. The mastitis was determined through collection of milk samples for evidence of infection by means of bacteriological examination, somatic cell count (SCC) and California Mastitis Test (CMT). Then samples were collected after 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours, antimicrobial intra-mammary gland treatment was initiated, with new evaluation 48 hours after treatment. The electrophoretic profile of serum protein of the goats, showed five fractions, as follows: albumin and globulin (a, b1, b2 e g-globulin). There was an increase in the production of g-globulin and lower production of b2-globulin fraction 12 hours after infection, and faster decrease in the supplemented group, showing the influence of vitamin E in the production of acute phase proteins. There was no influence of vitamin E in the serum concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in supplemented animals. The supplementation with vitamin E increased the concentration of immunoglobulin and decreased the production of acute phase proteins, probably the antioxidant effect minimizing the tissue injury during the inflammatory process in the mammary gland.

Utilizaram-se 14 cabras adultas, gestantes, primíparas, com sorologia negativa para Artrite Encefalite Caprina (CAEV), clinicamente sadias, divididas em dois grupos experimentais de sete animais. Grupo não suplementado (G1) e grupo suplementado com 2.000 U.I. de acetato de dl-a-tocoferol (G2 Vit E) via intramuscular no dia do parto e sete dias após o parto. Ao nono dia do pós-parto foram inoculados 300 UFCs da cepa de S. aureus ATCC 225923, na metade esquerda da glândula mamária de cada animal. A mastite foi determinada pela colheita das amostras de leite para a comprovação da infecção, por meio de exames bacteriológicos, contagem de células somáticas (CCS) e California Mastitis Test (CMT), a partir deste momento foram efetuadas colheitas às 12, 24, 48 e 72 horas, sendo posteriormente instituído o tratamento intramamário com antimicrobiano e nova avaliação 48 horas após o tratamento. O perfil eletroforético em gel de agarose das proteínas séricas das cabras, apresentaram cinco frações, sendo: albumina e globulinas (a, b1, b2 e g). Houve aumento na produção de g-globulina e menor produção da fração b2-globulina 12 horas após a infecção, com os valores reduzindo mais rapidamente no grupo suplementado, evidenciando a influência da vitamina E na diminuição da produção das proteínas de fase aguda. Não houve influência da vitamina E na concentração sérica de imunoglobulina G (IgG) nos animais suplementados. A suplementação com vitamina E aumentou a concentração de imunoglobulinas e diminuiu a produção de proteínas de fase aguda, provavelmente pelo efeito antioxidante minimizando a lesão tecidual durante o processo inflamatório localizado na glândula mamária.


#174 - Influence of the bipartite scrotum on the testicular and scrotal temperatures in goats, 29(10):797-802

Influence of the bipartite scrotum on the testicular and scrotal temperatures in goats. [Influência do escroto bipartido sobre as temperaturas dos testículos e escroto em caprinos.] Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(10):797-802. Curso de Medicina Veterinária, Universidade Federal do Piauí, Campus Profa Cinobelina Elvas, Bom Jesus, PI 64900-000, Brazil. E-mail: machadojunior2@yahoo.com.br O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do grau de bipartição escrotal e do período do ano sobre a termorregulação escroto-testicular em caprinos criados no Estado do Piauí. Foram utilizados 18 reprodutores caprinos machos, divididos em três grupos de seis animais: O Grupo I contendo caprinos com escroto simples, o Grupo II, caprinos com escroto bipartido até 50% do comprimento testicular e o Grupo III, caprinos com bipartição superior a 50% do comprimento testicular. Os parâmetros avaliados foram as temperaturas do escroto, testículo e funículo espermático, obtidas de forma invasiva, com um termômetro digital termoacoplável, e não invasiva, com um pirômetro, nos terços proximal, médio e distal. Os dados foram coletados nos períodos seco (outubro-novembro) e chuvoso (fevereiro-março) do ano, bem como, nos turnos da manhã (6h00 às 7h00) e tarde (14h00 às 15h00). Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA) seguida do teste SNK para comparação das médias (p<0,05). O período do ano interferiu na termorregulação escroto-testicular, pois no período seco as temperaturas do escroto, testículo e funículo espermático foram mais elevadas que as observadas no período chuvoso. O grau de bipartição do escroto foi outro fator que modificou a temperatura escroto-testicular, já que os caprinos que apresentaram escroto com maior grau de bipartição demonstraram as menores médias das temperaturas escroto-testiculares em ambos os períodos e turnos avaliados. Conclui-se, portanto, que tanto o período do ano quanto o grau de bipartição do escroto influenciaram o processo de termorregulação escroto-testicular em caprinos.

E-mail: machadojunior2@yahoo.com.br The influence of the scrotal bipartition and of the year period on the scrotal-testicular thermal regulation was evaluated in male goats raised in Piaui State, Brazil. Eighteen male goats at mating age were accomplished in this study and arranged into three Groups (6 animals each) obeying the classification as goats presenting no scrotal bipartition (Group I), goats showing scrotal bipartition at 50% of the testicular length (Group II), and goats with more than 50% of scrotal bipartition (Group III). The scrotal, testicular and spermatic funiculi temperatures were evaluated invasively with the aid of a digital thermometer and non-invasive with a pyrometer in the proximal, medial and distal portion. The data were acquired during the dry (October-November) and rainy (February-March) period of the year, measured in two shifts: morning (6h00-7h00) and afternoon (14h00-15h00). The results were submitted to variance analysis (ANOVA) following the SNK test for average comparison (p<0.05). The year period interfered on the scrotal-testicular thermal regulation, due to increased temperatures of the scrotal, testicular and spermatic funiculi during the dry period in comparison with the rainy period. The bipartition level was also a factor which contributed to the influence of scrotal-testicular temperature regulation, due to lower average scrotal-testicular temperature rates observed during both periods in the goats with higher levels of scrotal bipartition (>50%). It is possible to conclude that with the experimental conditions applied on this study, the level of scrotal bipartition and the climatic conditions interfere with the scrotal-testicular thermal regulation in goats.


#175 - Characterization of subclinical mastitis in dairy goats herds raised on an organic system in Rio Grande do Sul, 29(9):774-778

[Characterization of subclinical mastitis in dairy goats herds raised on an organic system in Rio Grande do Sul.] Caracterização da mastite subclínica em caprinos produzidos em sistema orgânico no Rio Grande do Sul. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(9):774-778. Faculdade de Veterinária, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Av. Bento Gonçalves 9090, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. E.mail: veronica.schmidt@ufrgs.br Milk and derivates are recognized as vehicle of different pathogens for humans. These micoorganisms may manifest as post-milking contamination or as in infections in the animal itself, particularly in mastitis. The aim of present study was characterizes the occurrence of mastitis and management aspects in dairy-goats raised in three farms of organic milk. The correlation between mastitis and goat husbandry was also investigated. The clinical exam of the mammary glands of 64 dairy-goats did not reveal the presence of clinical mastitis. Nevertheless, the California Mastitis Test (CMT) identified 54 (22.7%) reactive mammary halves (+ or ++). From 238 milk samples collected, 37 (15.6%) were positive for bacterial isolates. Coincident positive results for bacterial isolate tests and CMT were observed in only eight samples, which indicate a sensitivity index of 21.6% for the caprine subclinical mastitis diagnosis test. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were identified as the most frequent pathogen in milk samples (83.8%). The in vitro sensitivity test revealed CNS strains resistant to cotrimoxazole (50%), ampicillin (48.1%), nitrofurantoine (7.7%), cefaclor (7.14%), and oxacilline (3.85%). Cefalotine, gentamicin, neomycin, streptomycin, and tetracycline were the most effective drugs. No correlation was observed between the occurrence of subclinical mastitis and race, lactation period, drinking water quality in farms, or milking system as adopted in the present study.

O exame clínico da glândula mamária de 64 cabras em diferentes períodos de lactação, não acusou a presença de mastite clínica. Entretanto, o Califórnia Mastitis Test (CMT) identificou 54 (22,7%) metades mamárias reagentes (+ ou ++). Foram colhidas 238 amostras de leite, das quais houve isolamento bacteriano em 37 (15,6%). Em apenas oito amostras houve coincidência entre o isolamento bacteriano e o resultado do CMT, indicando sensibilidade de 21,6% para este teste no diagnóstico de mastite subclínica em caprinos. Staphylococcus coagulase negativa (SCN) foi o microrganismo mais freqüente (83,8%). O teste de sensibilidade microbiana in vitro revelou resistência das linhagens de SCN ao cotrimoxazol (50%), ampicilina (48,1%), nitrofurantoína (7,7%), cefaclor (7,14%) e oxacilina (3,85%). Cefalotina, gentamicina, neomicina, estreptomicina e tetraciclina foram os antimicrobianos mais efetivos frente aos isolados. Não se evidenciou relação entre a ocorrência de mastite subclínica com a raça, a fase de lactação, sistema de ordenha ou qualidade da água utilizada nas propriedades.

On two farms the prevalence was of 32% (23/71) and 100% (32/32). On another farm one goat out of 19 had severe clinical signs, but the others of the flock were not examined clinically. Cattle, sheep and buffaloes were not affected. Six goats were euthanized and necropsied. No gross lesions were observed. Upon histological examination the main lesion was the vacuolization of the perikaryon of neurons and cytoplasm of epithelial cells of thyroid, liver, kidney, pancreas and macrophages of different organs. In the central nervous system the vacuolization of the perikaria was more sever in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum and in nuclei of the brain stem, mainly the cerebellar nuclei. Wallerian degeneration of axons and gliosis was also observed. The high frequency of the disease on the three farms suggests that poisoning by I. carnea subsp. fistulosa is very important for goats on Marajó Island where there are large amounts of the plant in the pastures.

This report aims to describe the epidemiologic, clinic and pathologic aspects of closantel overdosage in sheep and goats.

For conditioning, goats were allowed to feed on M. rigida leaves for 15 min, followed by LiCl or water administration. The time spent on eating M. rigida leaves was measured. The conditioning was repeated daily until the LiCl-treated goats stopped eating M. rigida. On the 10th, 17th, and 24th day after conditioning, extinction trials of the M. rigida aversion were performed in goats by using single-choice tests. There was no difference between the two treatment groups with respect to the consumption of M. rigida on the first day of aversion conditioning, however, controls ingested increasing amounts of the plant on consecutive conditioning days. On the second day, five out of the seven goats in the lithium group did not eat the leaves, but on the third day, all the goats in the lithium group did not ingest M. rigida. N. caninum positivity rate was 19.77%. Only one of the properties had no seropositive animal revealing N. caninum diffusion in the state. Seropositivity frequency did not correlate with sex, age, or reproductive problems. However, the presence of dogs was associated with a higher frequency of N. caninum seropositivity. A choroplethic map with hatch patterns showing the geographical distribution of goats seropositive for Neospora caninum may considerably contribute to geographic epidemiological studies and the development of disease control strategies.
