ABSTRACT.- Oliveira Filho J.C., Kommers G.D., Masuda E.K., Marques B.M.F.P.P., Fighera R.A., Irigoyen L.F. & Barros C.S.L. 2010. [Retrospective study of 1,647 mammary gland tumors in dogs.] Estudo retrospectivo de 1.647 tumores mamários em cães. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(2):177-185. Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Av. Roraima 1000, Camobi, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. E-mail: glaukommers@yahoo.com Mammary gland tumors are common in dogs and are the most common type of neoplasm of female dogs. The main purposes of this study were to establish the prevalence of the mammary gland tumors, as well as of its different histologic types (neoplastic and non-neoplastic), diagnosed in the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. There were 1,304 biopsy reports of mammary gland tumors during 1990-2008 and 132 necropsy reports of dogs with mammary tumors in 2000-2008. Data about breed, gender, and age of dogs, tumor localization, morphologic diagnosis, and metastasis occurrence were analyzed. In the biopsy cases, 1,495 tumors were diagnosed, considering the presence of more than one type of tumor in some of the dogs. From those, 1,465 were neoplastic and 30 were non-neoplastic. Within the neoplasms, 390 (26.6%) were benign and 1,075 (73.3%) were malignant. The benign/malignant ratio was 1:2.75. During the years 2000-2008, 1,125 necropsies of dogs were performed, 132 (11.64%) of which with mammary gland tumors. There were 152 morphologic diagnoses, being 150 of neoplastic and two of non-neoplastic lesions. Simple carcinoma was the most prevalent histologic type, both among biopsy and necropsy cases. On necropsy cases, metastases to lymph nodes and distant organs were seen in 39 (29.5%) and 64 (53,3%) cases, respectively.

Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Av. Roraima 1000, Camobi, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS, Brazil.

RESUNO.- Gasparelli E.R.F., Camargo D.G., Yanaka R., Mendes L.C.N, Peiró J.R., Bovino F., Perri S.H.V. & Feitosa F.L.F. 2009. [Physical and serum cortisol levels evaluation of Nelore newborn calves born by normal and laborious parturition.]

E-mail: leydsonf@fmva.unesp.br The purpose of present study was to evaluate the vitality and the serum levels of cortisol from newborn calves by normal and laborious deliveries, and to obtain the distocia register in Nelore embryo recipient cows. Three hundred ten calves were evaluated. The register of 38 dystocic calvings (38/310) and 8 abortions (8/310) were observed. In newborn animals the morbity and mortality rates were 77.93% and 3.44%, respectively. Calves born after long dystocic calving, lasting 4-6 hours, showed the highest mean values of respiratory frequency and serum cortisol levels. Animals born after laborious calving presented higher rectal temperature than those born at normal calving. The APGAR score showed that 90% calves had signs of dullness independent of parturition type.

#124 - Primary congenital lymphedema in Red Angus cattle, 29(9):713-718

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Macêdo J.T.S.A., Lucena R.B., Tochetto C., Oliveira Filho J.C., Pierezan F., Irigoyen L.F. & Barros C.S.L. 2009. [Primary congenital lymphedema in Red Angus cattle.] Linfedema primário congênito em bovinos Red Angus. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(9):713-718. Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br Cases of congenital lymphedema were observed affecting 12 cross Red Angus calves from the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Affected calves presented variable degrees of subcutaneous edema at birth, involving mainly the hind limbs but also other body regions. The injection of methylene blue dye in 5% solution into the interdigital space of the hind limbs of three affected calves and one normal control indicated an interruption of the lymph flow in the affected calves; this suggests a failure of the distal peripheral lymphatics to connect with the central trunks. At necropsy of three affected calves subcutaneous edema was variably observed in the hind limbs, prepuce and ventral abdomen. Edema of body cavities was not observed. In two cases there was hipoplasia of the popliteal lymph nodes associated to dilatation of lymphatic vessels. DNA tests demonstrated that all affected calves were born from cows sired by the same bull suggesting an inherited basis for the disease. Considering the small percentage of affected calves born from cows sired by the suspect bull it is probable that an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance is involved.

#125 - Experimental acute poisoning by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in cattle, 29(9):753-766

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Anjos B.L., Irigoyen L.F., Piazer J.V.M., Brum J.S., Fighera R.A. & Barros C.S.L. 2009. [Experimental acute poisoning by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in cattle.] E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br This experiment was design to address the following points in relation to the acute poisoning by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in cattle: 1) the severity of the thrombocytopenia in different stages of the intoxication and its relationship to possible deficits in the secondary hemostasis, 2) the relationship between neutropenia and the morphological signs of septicemia occasionally found at necropsy, and 3) the mechanism of anemia and its relationship with blood loss, medium life of erythrocytes and the progress of the disease. The fresh green upper parts of P. aquilinum were fed to four mixed breed calves with average age of 18 months and weights ranging from 190 to 215 kg. A calf of similar age and weight was kept together with the other four under the same conditions, except for the ingestion of P. aquilinum. The four fern-fed calves died with typical features of acute bracken fern poisoning after being fed with the plant for 53-58 days daily doses of 8.0, 8.6, 10.2, and 10.6g/kg body weight totaling at the end of the experiment, respectively, 59.3%, 63.3%, 47.4%, and 47.5% of bracken fern in relation to their body weight. The disease was characterized by fever up to 42.5°C and varying degrees of hemorrhages observed clinically, at necropsy and on histological examination. Death occurred 6-7 days after the onset of fever. The hematological changes consisted mainly of marked thrombocytopenia and neutropenia. Two of the four affected calves had mild anemia. The deficits in secondary hemostasis were mild in each case. There were no significant changes thus permitting to rule out the role of secondary hemostasis in the pathogenesis of the hemorrhages in the bracken fern poisoning. The measurement of fibrin degradation products in the serum showed conflicting results and did no allow for a solid conclusion regarding the role of disseminated intravascular coagulation in the pathogenesis of the hemorrhages in fern poisoning. The cytology and the histopathology of bone marrow from the four poisoned calves revealed marked decrease in the numbers of hematopoietic cells from the three marrow lineages, which characterizes marrow failure due to aplasia; it was concluded that the events of the primary hemostasis due to thrombocytopenia are responsible for the hemorrhages. In blood culture from three affected calves there was growth of Klebsiella oxytoca, Staphylococcus hyicus and Staphylococcus aureus, indicating that septicemia, facilitated by neutropenia could have a role in the death of cattle acutely poisoned due to the ingestion of P. aquilinum. Additional points of the interest in the acute experimental poisoning by bracken fern in cattle reported here were the development of hematuria and the so called laryngeal form.

RESUMO.- Anjos B.L., Irigoyen L.F., Piazer J.V.M., Brum J.S., Fighera R.A. & Barros C.S.L. 2009. [Experimental acute poisoning by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in cattle.] As alterações hematológicas revelaram trombocitopenia e neutropenia acentuadas.

E-mail: ggpereira2002@yahoo.com.br Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction plays an important role on heart failure progression. In order to obtain additional reference values of left ventricular diastolic parameters and investigate influence of common variables, peak E wave (peak E), peak A wave (peak A), E/A ratio (E/A), E wave deceleration time (EDT) and isovolumic relaxation time (IRVT) were studied in 40 clinically healthy dogs, by pulsed wave Doppler. The following values were obtained: peak E = 0.747 ± 0.117 m/s, peak A = 0.487 ± 0.062 m/s, E/A = 1.533 ± 0.198, EDT = 88.7 ± 9.2 ms and IRVT = 0.080 ± 0.009 s. Some parameters were influenced by heart rate (peak E, peak A and IRVT), by age (peak A and E/A) and by body weight (TRIV). Gender influence was absent. Values obtained can be used as reference for canine specimens but its interpretation should consider on the influence of related variables.

E-mail: leydsonf@fmva.unesp.br The aim of this research was to evaluate the shedding of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in fecal samples from 14 calves from one dairy farm, from birth until 60 days old and from cows until eight weeks after parturition. The higher percentage of oocysts excreted was observed in 7-day-old calves. In the post-partum period 43.7% of cows were positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts. Further analyses were accomplished in 57 calves from another 32 milk farms, previously known as positive for Cryptosporidium, through oocysts fecal screening and clinical signs analyses until calves were 30 days old. Fecal samples from all animals that presented diarrhea were screened for the presence of bacteria, virus (Rotavirus and Coronavirus ) and protozoa (Eimeria spp.).

ABSTRACT.- Arenhart S., Silva L.F., Henzel A., Ferreira R., Weiblen R. & Flores E.F. 2008. [Fetal protection against bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in pregnant cows previously immunized with an experimental attenuated vaccine.] E-mail: flores@ccr.ufsm.br This paper reports the antibody response and fetal protection in pregnant cows conferred by an experimental vaccine containing two attenuated strains of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV-1 and BVDV-2). Cows (n=19) were vaccinated twice, with a 34-days-interval, with the experimental vaccine and together with non-vaccinated controls (n=18), were mated and challenged between days 60 and 90 of gestation by intranasal inoculation of four heterologous BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 isolates. The antibody response was evaluated by serum-neutralization tests performed at different intervals after vaccination (days 34, 78 and 138 post-vaccination [pv]). Fetal protection was monitored by ultrassonographic and clinical examination of the dams and fetuses during the rest of gestation; and through virological and serological examination of pre-colostral blood obtained from aborted and/or recently born fetuses/calves. At the day of challenge (day 138 pv), all vaccinated cows had neutralizing antibodies in high titers against BVDV-1 (1,280- ³10,240), and with one exception (titer 20), presented moderate to high titers to BVDV-2 (80-1,280). At the end of the monitoring, only three out of 18 control cows (16.6%) delivered healthy, virus-free calves. Fifteen non-vaccinated cows (83.3%) presented signs of fetal infection and/or had reproductive losses. Seven of these cows (38.8%) delivered virus-positive calves; five were healthy and survived (27.7%); two were premature or weak and lasted three and 15 days, respectively. The other eight cows (44.4%) aborted between day 30 post-challenge and the parturition; or delivered premature or stillbirth calves. In contrast, 17 out of 19 (89.4%) vaccinated cows delivery virus-free, healthy calves. One vaccinated cow aborted around day 130 post-challenge, yet this fetus could not be examined for the presence of virus. Another cow delivered a virus-positive calf (5.2%). In summary, the experimental vaccine induced adequate antibody titers in most animals and the immunological response induced by vaccination was able to prevent fetal infection and reproductive losses upon challenge with a pool of heterologous BVDV isolates. Hence, this experimental vaccine may be an attractive alternative for the prevention of reproductive losses associated with BVDV infection.

[Acute poisoning by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in cattle in central Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.] E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br Cases of acute poisoning by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) in cattle from 10 small farms of seven municipalities of the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, were reviewed. The study encompassed 6,256 necropsies of cattle considering a 43-year period and included 15 necropsies of cattle dying from acute bracken poisoning. Morbidity and mortality were 17.9% and lethality was virtually 100%. In 40% of the farms the disease occurred in small outbreaks affecting several cattle per farm and in 60% only one bovine was affected in each farm. Main clinical signs include fever (40-42°C), apathy, drooling, and hemorrhages; the latter were mainly from the gums, nostrils, and gastrointestinal tract. Multiple petechiae were observed in several mucosae and in the skin. Occasionally hematuria and blood in the milk were reported. The disease was invariably fatal after a course of approximately two days. Hematological changes included severe neutropenia, non-regenerative normocytic normochromic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Necropsy findings include hemorrhages o varying degrees in several organs and infarcts in the liver. Both hemorrhages and hepatic infarcts were confirmed histologically; clusters of bacterial rods and thrombosed vessels were associated with the infarcts. Marked bone marrow aplasia was a consistent finding in the four cases in which the marrow was evaluated.
