Prevalence and distribution of serotypes of micobacteria of the MAIS- Complex isolated from pigs in Brazil

Abstract in English:

From the mandibular lymph nodes of 4,645 swines collected at slaughteredhouses from the States of Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás (Distrito Federal) and Pernambuco, were detected 374 (8.0%) tuberculous or tuberculous like lesions. The bacteriological examination of the 374 altered lymph nodes and another 266 apparently normal organs permitted the isolation of 174 mycobacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare-scrofukzceum complex. The serological characterization of the MAIS complex showed that 156 cultures were belong to 16 serotypes of the Schaefer's classification system. The most prevalent serotypes were: 8 (Davis), 7 (VII), 12 (Howetl), 4 (IV), 15 (Dent) and 6 (VI). No M avium serotypes could be identified. The distribution at the different regions showed more prevalence of the serotypes 4, 8 and 12 in Paraná; 7, 8 and 15 in Rio de Janeiro; 7, 8 and 15 in Minas Gerais and in Goiás; 4, 7 and 8 in Pernambuco.

Serological survey for swine leptospirosis in the State of Rio de Janeiro and boundary region

Abstract in English:

Out of 1,045 swine blood serum samples, from five pig farms located in three municipalities in the State of Rio de Janeiro and one in the boundary region in the State of São Paulo, 52 (4.97%) showed positive reactions (≥1:100 dilution titer) in the microscopic agglutination test with live antigens. The reactive serovars were: tarassovi, pomona, autumnalis, canicola, pyrogenes, castelloni and javanica. Thirty sera from pigs raised in backyards did not react in the sarne test.

Poisoning by Palicourea grandiflora (Rubiaceae) of cattle in Rondonia

Abstract in English:

The toxicity of Palicourea grandiflora (H.B.K.) Standl. for cattle was demonstrated experimentally. The fresh leaves of P. grandiflora were given orally to ten bovines in amounts that varied from 0.5 to 12.2 g of the plant per kg of body weight. One to 2 g/kg ofthe plant were necessary to cause death. The first symptoms of poisoning were observed between 6 and 25 hours after the administration of the plant material. ln the three experiments in which large amounts (5 g/kg and more) of the fresh plant were given, two animals were found dead in the moming and the third died after being disturbed. Three additional animals which received between 1.0 and 2.5 g/kg of the fresh plant also died; apparently healthy for approximately 16 to 25 hours, death was caused or precipitated by only 2 to 10 minutes of exercise. The symptoms of poisoning were: an initial period during which the animal refused to move; lying down or falling to the ground in an upright position, then onto its side; opistotonus, peddling movements with the legs, bellowing; and death. The clinical symptoms, after the animal fell down, lasted from 3 to 8 minutes. Post-mortem exarninations were negative. Histopathological exarninations showed the most characteristic lesion to be hydropic vacuolar degeneration of the epithelial lining of the distal convoluted kidney tubules, seen in four of the six animals which died after ingestion of the fresh plant. It was concluded that this shrub is a cause of "sudden death" in cattle observed in Rondônia. Four months after harvest, the air-dried plant kept at room temperature retained one fourth, and after 6 months, one eighth of the toxicity of fresh material. The effect of the plant was cumulative when given in daily doses corresponding to one fifth and one tenth of the lethal dose, but not when given in smaller doses.

Experimental poisoning of cattle by the pericarp of the fruit of Ricinus communis

Abstract in English:

Pericarps of the ripe fruit of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis L., Euphorbiaceae) were given orally to eight steers. Symptoms of poisoning were seen in six of the animals. Four receiving 5 g/kg or more of the plant material subsequently died. The neuro-muscular symptoms were the sarne as those observed in experimental poisoning by the leaves, different from the gastro-enteritis produced by the seeds of the plant. The symptoms were: swaying gait; a necessity to lie down after short periods of exercise; difficulty in lying down; muscular tremors; salivation and chewing movements. The symptoms persisted a few hours and were followed by either rapid recovery or death. The dried pericarps are approximately four times as toxic as fresh green leaves and the reaction observed is even more acute. Only minor post-mortem and histopathological changes were found.

Buxtonella sulcata in Black buffalo and cattle in northern Brazil

Abstract in English:

The discovery of the ciliate Buxtonella sulcata Jameson, 1926, in the faeces of buffaloes from the island of Marajó and from the Sta te of Pará, as well as in faeces of cattle from the Territory of Amapá, raises the question of its introduction and its significance for animal health, since Balantidium coli and Buxtonella sulcata, although from diferente taxonomic groups, can be confused morphologically.

Anomalies in the development of the tubular genital system of slaughtered female buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

Abstract in English:

Genital systems of 612 female water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis Lin.) of undefined breed, obtained from slaughterhouses in the State of Para, were studied. A total of 77 (12.6%) animals showed abnormalities. Results from pregnant and non-pregnant animals were considered separately. In the oviducts of pregnant buffaloes, one case (1.3%) of unilateral segmentary aplasia was identified, while three similar cases (3.9%) were noted in non-pregnant buffaloes, as well as one case (1 .3%) with bilateral involvement. A large percentage (44.2%) of the findings were paraovarian cysts: 26 instances (33.8%) of unilateral paraovarian cysts were identified in the mesosalpinx, 11 (14.3%) corresponding to pregnant and 15 (19.5%) to non-pregnant females; eight bilateral cases (10.4%) were also observed, of which three (3.9%) were found in pregnant and five (6.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. In the uterus, out of a total of 29 (37.6%) anomalies, seven (9.1%) appeared in pregnant and 22 (28.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. A high prevalence (28.6%) of cystic formation on the perimetrium was observed in these animals. Malformations of the cervix were only found in three (3.9%) non-pregnant buffaloes. Two anomalies (2.6%) of the vagina were encountered in non-pregnant animals. Four (5.2%) anomalies were seen in the vestibule, one (1 .3%) in a pregnant animal and three (3.9%) in non-pregnant animals.
