[Ultrasonographic evaluation of the eyes’ posterior segment of diabetic and non-diabetic dogs with cataracts.] E-mail: renatasq@usp.br Cataracts jeopardize the light penetration into the eye and may restrain direct exam of eye structures. It is necessary to identify very early any eye disease that could cause the failure of cataract surgery. The ocular ultrasonography or echography is a safe, non invasive, inexpensive and easy procedure that complements ocular examination. Two hundred and twenty five eyes of 123 dogs were evaluated using a 10 Mhz linear transducer ultrasound. The dogs were divided into three groups, as there is Group 1: 36 healthy control dogs; Group 2: 52 non diabetic dogs with cataracts; and Group 3: 35 diabetic dogs with cataracts; all of them were patients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Sao Paulo. The ultrasonographic findings were in Group 1: vitreous degeneration in 43%, posterior vitreous detachment in 7.7%, asteroid hyalosis in 4.6% of the eyes; in Group 2: vitreous degeneration in 58.9%, posterior vitreous detachment in 8.4%, asteroid hyalosis in 2.1%, inflammatory or haemorrhagic process in 2.1%, retinal detachment in 4.3% of the eyes; and in Group 3: vitreous degeneration in 50.7%, posterior vitreous detachment in 13.8%, asteroid hyalosis in 12.3%, inflammatory or haemorrhagic process in 3.1%, retinal detachment in 3.1% of the eyes. It could be concluded that (1) diabetic dogs, mainly the ones with diabetes for more than 2 years, have greater chances to develop asteroid hyalosis; (2) there were no significant differences in retinal detachment frequencies for the diabetic and non diabetic dogs; and (3) the ocular ultrasonography is a safe, effective and important exam for the pre-operatory evaluation of dogs with cataracts.

ABSTRACT.- Ferrigno C.R.A., Schmaedecke A., Oliveira L.M., D’Avila R.S., Yamamoto E.Y. & Saut J.P.E. 2007. [Cranial and dorsal acetabular denervation technique in treatment of hip dysplasia in dogs: 360 days evaluation of 97 cases.] E-mail: cassioaf@usp.br The aim was to evaluate the clinical results of cranial and dorsal acetabular denervation using curettage in dysplastic dogs. Ninty seven dogs without distinction of breed and sex, 1 to 7 years of age, were analyzed for diagnosis and treatment of hip dysplasia, based on physical examination, clinical signs and radiographic findings. For evaluation of results of the surgical denervation technique, clinical examinations were performed preoperatively (initial exam) and postoperatively at days 2, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 180 and 360. All animals were evaluated for lameness, pain to movement and touch, muscular atrophy degree, pain sensivity to Ortolani’s test and assessment of life quality. The surgical denervation procedure decreases lameness, pain to movement and touch after 2 days of procedure, decreases muscular atrophy after 60 days of procedure, and improves quality of life from the owner’s and veterinarian’s point of view even after 1 year of the treatment. Dorsal acetabular denervation is a feasible surgical technique in treatment of pain secondary to hip dysplasia in dogs, with significant decrease of pain after 2 days of treatment, improvement of quality of life, decrease of lameness, and consequently joyful animals and owners extremely satisfied with the results obtained by the proposed treatment. The surgical technique must include the curettage of nerve fibers from the cranial-dorsal and dorsal region of the acetabular periosteum.

#63 - Humoral iminune response, bacterial recovery and time lesions in mice geneticaly selected for high and low antibody production and in outbreed Balb/c mice face to Leptospira interrogans sorovar ictero

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Marinho M., Langoni H., Oliveira S.L., Carreira R., Perri, S.H.V. e Luvizoto M.C. 2002. [Humoral iminune response, bacterial recovery and time lesions in mice geneticaly selected for high and low antibody production and in outbreed Balb/c mice face to Leptospira interrogans sorovar icterohaemorrhagiae.] The aim of the present work was to evaluate the association among the kinetics of humoral immune response, the recovery ofviable leptospiras and the intensity ofthe tissue lesions in mice selected for high (H) and low (L) production of antibodies (selection N-A) and in mice from the outbreed Balb/c Iine, inoculated with pathogenic Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae. Toe H and L lines showed modifications in some steps ofthe immune response, mainly in relation to the macrophagic activity, representing extreme phenotypes found in heterogeneous natural populations. Mice were sacrificed in eight moments after the infection. Analysis of the results revealed that from the 7th day after the infection, on Iine H mice presented antibodies titles significantly higher as compared to the L line mice, maintaining the multispecific effect Balb/c tine mice showed intermediàte results between the two Iines. Antibodies production worked as a timiting factor to the infection, becausewhen a greater leptospiras recovery was obtained, at the initial phase of the infection, the titles of antibodies were elevated. Inflammatory and degenerative process led to similar lesions in the organs ofinfected mice. Only a variation in the degree oftissue compromising was observed according to the tine. H tine mice showed more extensive lesions than L and Balb/c lines mice. For the Balb/c tine mice, the lesions were moderate. As a mie, H and Balb/c mice lines showed a Th2 profile of immune response, with higher indexes of antibody production and gravity ofthe lesions, while L line mice presented a Th 1 profile ofimmune response.

RESUMO.- Marinho M., Langoni H., Oliveira S.L., Carreira R., Perri, S.H.V. e Luvizoto M.C. 2002. [Humoral iminune response, bacterial recovery and time lesions in mice geneticaly selected for high and low antibody production and in outbreed Balb/c mice face to Leptospira interrogans sorovar icterohaemorrhagiae.]

#64 - Streptomycin increases the adherence on oral epitelial cells of Bacteroides melaninogenicus involved in the periodontal lesions of

Abstract in English:

"Cara inchada" of cattle (CI) is a periodontitis which occurs in calves in several regions of Brazil. lts progressive lesions, caused mainly by Bacteroides melaninogenicus anel Actinomyces pyogenes, could lead to loss of teeth, malnutrition anel possibly death of affected animals. For further analysis of the pathogenesis of this disease the influence of streptomycin on the adherence of the causative bacteria to oral epithelial cells of cattle was determined. Production of streptomycin by soil bacteria (Actinomycetes) in Brazil had been suggested by several authors. ln our studies, streptomycin in subinibitory concentrations increased tenfold the rate of adherence with B. melaninogenicus (from 0.4 to 4.0 bacteria per bovine epithelial cell). On the contrary, streptomycin did not influence significantly the adherence of A. pyogenes nor streptococci of the viridans group. Thus, streptomycin could be a contributing factor to the development of the periodontal infections with B. melaninogenicus.

#66 - Behavioral study of the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus (Chiroptera) related with the attack rate on cattle in captivity

Abstract in English:

The objective of this study was to determine the attack rate of vampire bats, Desmodus rotundus (Geoffroy, 1810), on cattle kept in captivity. It was observed that the bats returned to wounds previously made by them, but without a rigorous pattern of repetition. New wounds were made almost everyday, while old wounds were temporarily or definitively abandoned. Vampire bats fed on all regions of the body, although showed preference for the front legs, dorsal region, hind legs and withers. Finally, a great number of wounds were opened, whereas only a few were utilized on the sarne night.

#67 - Comparative evaluation of different administration methods of a vaccine prepared with the LaSota strain of Newcastle disease virus

Abstract in English:

A comparative study of different application methods of a vaccine prepared with the LaSota strain, in primary vaccination against Newcastle disease, was· carried out in broiler-chicks from immune parental stock. Primary vaccination of seven day old birds was performed by aerosol, eye drop instillation and drinking water. The aerosol method induced the highest response of the hemagglutination inhiniting antibody, which was significant at the 5% level of probability whem compared to the eyedrop and drinking water methods. Whem vaccinated birds were challenged, it was found that the aerosol method provided better protection than the drinking water method, significant at the 5% level of probability. However, no significant diferences could be detected between the aerosol and the eyedrop methods. There was no correlalion between the hemagglutination inhibiting antibody titers found and the protection to challenge.
