Tokarnia C.H., Barbosa J.D., Oliveira C.M.C., Brito M.F., Oliveira R.B. & Barbas L.A. 2004. [Comparative epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of poisoning by Arrabidaea bilabiata (Bignoniaceae) in buffalo and cattle.] E-mail: tokarnia@ufrrj.br Experiments showed that the clinical and pathological pictures were essentially the same, but the buffalo was at least twice more resistant than the bovine to the toxic effect of Arrabidaea bilabiata (Sprague) Sandw. It was also shown that the young leaves are twice (October, end of the dry season) or one and a half (May, end of the rainy season) more toxic than the mature leaves, and that the plant is more toxic in October. These data indicate that the smaller incidence of poisoning by plants of the group that causes sudden death in buffaloes in the Amazon Region is, in part, due to the greater resistance of this animal species to the toxic action of the plant. Also important seems to be the coincidence of the preferential habitat of the buffalo (flooded areas) with the habitat of A. bilabiata, less toxic than Palicourea marcgravii St.Hil. which is a plant of the non-flooded areas, the preferential habitat of cattle.

#42 - The blood and urinary values in the pre and post-parturient period of buffaloes, kept on exclusive pasture feeding., 23(2):87-92

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Oliveira C.M.C., Barbosa J.D., Pfeifer I.B. & Cardoso D.P. 2003. [The blood and urinary values in the pre and post-parturient period of buffaloes, kept on exclusive pasture feeding.] E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br Eight lactating buffaloes of the Murrah breed were used from 60 days before up to 60 days after calving, in order to evaluate alterations in the concentration of blood glucose, total plasmatic protein, haematocrit and the presence of ketonic bodies in the urine. The 5 to 10-year old buffaloes were clinically healthy and had had at least two lactations. During the experimental period the animais were maintained on Brachiaria brizantha pasture and · supplemented with a mineral mixture and water. The media concentrations of blood glucose and the media values of the haematocrit diminished significantly after calving (p<0,05). The concentrations of total plasmatic protein did not show significant variation during the pre and post-parturient period. The ketonic bodies in the pre-parturient period were only detected in the urine of one buffaloe, but after the 32nd day of lactation ketonic bodies were detected in ali animais. There was a direct relationship between the color of the urine positive by the Rothera test and blood glucose concentrations. lt can be concluded that at the beginning of lactation the buffaloes had an energetic deficit, characterized by a decline of blood glucose concentrations and the presence of ketonic bodies in the urine, and that lactation caused a progressive decline of the hematocrit, but that the concentration of total plasmatic protein did not vary during the pre and post-parturient period.

#43 - A comparative study of some functional exams of the ruminai fluid and of some blood metabolites of cattle and buffaloes, 23(1):33-37

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Barbosa J.D., Ávila S.C., Dias R.V.C., Pfeifer I.B. & Oliveira C.M.C. 2003. [A comparative study of some functional exams of the ruminai fluid and of some blood metabolites of cattle and buffaloes.J Estudo comparativo de algumas provas funcionais do fluido ruminai e de metabólitos sangüíneos de bovinos e bubalinos. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 23(1):33-37. Central de Diagnóstico Veterinário, Universidade Federal do Pará, Rua Maximino Porpino da Silva 1000, Castanhal, PA 68740-080, Brazil. E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br ln adult buffaloes and cattle in the Amazonian Region, fed elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), the following values ofthe ruminai fluid were determined: colour, odor, viscosity, sedimentation, flotation, pH, the reduction of methylene blue, glucose fermentation, total acidity, total number of protozoa, the amount of chlorides, reduction of nitrites and the predominant group of bacteria. ln the blood serum, the amounts of chlorides, total proteins and urea were also established. A comparison between the parameters observed in buffaloes and cattle did not show significant differences, with exception of the amount of chlorides and the number and distribution of protozoa. ln buffaloes the amount of chlorides was lower and the number of protozoa was higher than those observed in cattle; additionally in buffaloes the small protozoa predominated, to the contrary of cattle, in which the large protozoa predominated.

#44 - Hemolytic anemia caused by Indigofera suffruticosa (Leg. Papilionoideae) in cattle, 21 (1):18-22

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- .- Barbosa Neto J.D., Oliveira C.M.C., Peixoto P.V., Barbosa I.B.P., Ávila S.C. & Tokamia C.H. 2001. [Hemolytic anemia caused by Indigofera suffruticosa (Leg. Papilionoideae) in cattle] Anemia hemolítica causada por Indigofera suffruticosa (Leg. Papilíonoideae) em bovinos. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(1):18-22. Central de Diagnóstico Veterirnírio, Universidade Federal do Pará, Castanhal, Pará 68740-080, Brazil. The aereal parts of Indigofera suffruticosa Mill. (family Leg. Papilionoideae) were force-fed fresh to 6 bovines in daily doses of 10 to 40 g/kg. Cattle breeclers of various parts of the Northeast of Brazil accuse this plant as the cause of a non-fatal disease characterized by hemoglobinuria. The disease occurs only in years when the plant proliferates well invading the native pastures. All experimental animals had hemoglobinuria, which was transitory, inspite continuation of the administration of the plant. Two animals had no further manifestations, a third animal showed only slight other manifestations, anel the other three had additional symptoms of moderate intensity. These were apathy, whitish visible mucous membranes, rough hair coat, anorexia, descrease in frequency anel intensity of the ruminal movements, tachycardia, positive venous pulse anel dispnoea. Before the ocrnrrence of the hemolytic crisis the urine had a bluish-green colom: None of the experimental animals diecl, but one was euthanized whilst showing hemoglobinuria. Post-mortem finclings were anemia, the bladder containing wine-red urine, swollen dark-brown kidneys, liver on the outsicle anel on the cutsurface bluish anel with perceptible lobular design. The main histological changes were found in liver anel kiclney. ln the liver there was coagulative necrosis and cloudy swelling and/or cytoplasmatic microvacuolization of the hepatocytes; in the kidney there was severe nephrosis, associatecl with large amounts of filtrate ancl/or hemoglobine in the Bowman spaces, in the tu bules anel also in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells.

Central de Diagnóstico Veterirnírio, Universidade Federal do Pará, Castanhal, Pará 68740-080, Brazil. As partes aéreas ele lndigofera suffruticosa Mill.
