#41 - Abortion in bovine caused by ingestion of Ateleia glazioviana (Leg. Papilionoideae)

Abstract in English:

Abortion in cows is very common in western Santa Catarina, Brazil, specially in the counties at the borders of the Uruguai river. According to case histories abortion occurs during any time of gestation; cows at the end of gestation deliver weak calves, which have some difficulties to stand and die some days later. Most of the farmers inform that the problem occurs only in pastores infested by a plant with the common names of "maria-preta", "cinamono-bravo" or "timbó". Experiments with fresh and dried leaves of Ateleia glazioviana Baill were made with 8 cows in different stages of gestation. Three cows which received the plant in single or subdivided doses of 35 g/kg aborted from 5 to 16 days after administration. With doses between 22 and 30 g/kg weak calves were delivered. Besides abortion the cows showed apathy, recumbency, vulvar edema, retention of the placenta and endometritis. Through these results it can be concluded that A. glazioviana eaten by cows in doses larger than 22 g/kg can cause abortion and delivery of weak calves without minimal conditions for survival. This suggests that most abortions in cows, kept in fields with A. glazioviana, occur due to the toxicity of this plant species.

#42 - Experimental poisoning by Baccharis megapotamica var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Compositae) of rabbits

Abstract in English:

The dried and powdered aerial parts of Baccharis megapotamica Sprengel var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Baker) Barroso, plants which occur mainly in Southern Brazil, were toxic when administered by stomach tube to 68 rabbits; 42 of these died. The two varieties of the plant showed similar toxic properties, but there were a few differences. In both varieties the toxic symptoms were practically the sarne independently of its growing stage, the sex of the plants or its origin. However there were large differences in the lethal dose of the two varieties. It was between 2 and 4 g/kg for variety megapotamica and between 0,34 and 0,68 g/kg for var. weirii (dried plant material). Thus var. weirii was about 5 times more toxic than var. megapotamica. Fatal poisoning was acute with both varieties. In most cases symptoms caused by var. megapotamica were seen during 20 hours to 4 days; with var. weirii they were seen in most cases during less than 15 hours. Death occurred in most cases between 22 and 73 hours, and between 12 and 56 hours respectively after administration of the plant. The main symptoms shown by the rabbits intoxicated by var. megapotamica were anorexia and modified feces, mainly in the form of diarrhea, in most cases with the presence of mucus and blood. Anorexia was observed also in poisoning by var. weirii, but there were few cases of diarrhea and the faeces never contained mucus and blood. The main post-mortem findings in the rabbits poisoned by the two varieties were seen in the digestive tract, mainly in the stomach and caecum. The mucosa of the stomach was reddened, especially in the cranial part. The content of the caecum had a liquid-pasty consistency. Dark red slightly elevated and rough áreas were seen on the caecal mucosa. The caecal wall was frequently edematous. There were also lesions in the small and large intestine. In the small intestine lesions were seen only in poisoning by var. weirii and consisted of a reddened mucosa; in the colon and rectum severe lesions were seen only in poisoning by var. megapotamica and consisted of diphteroid necrosis. Both varieties produced livers that were almost always clearer than normal and slightly mottled. The histological lesions were necrosis and hemorrhages in the upper portion of the stomach mucosa, but necrosis of the parietal cells were more severe with var. megapotamica, being only slight with var. weirii. The mucosa of the small intestine only showed congestion and hemorrhages with var. weirii. The most important lesions were seen in the caecum, where there were hemorrhages and necrosis of the mucosa, and edema of the submucosa. Granulocytes were present, in most cases in small arnounts, but were generally more numerous with var. megapotamica, were some showed karyorrhexis; karyorrhexis was not seen after poisoning by var. weirii. In the initial part of the colon there were more hemorrhages and necrosis of the mucosa with var. weirii. However in the mucosa of the distal part of the colon and of the rectum, hemorrhages and necrosis with the presence of nuclear detritos (debris) on the surface of the mucosa, and necrosis with cariorrexia of the epithelial cells of the glands, were more common with var. megapotamica. Basically the sarne lesions were seen in the liver following poisoning by both varieties; there was severe tumefaction of the hepatic cells of the whole lobule, being especially severe in the periportal area. In the lymphatic tissue of the spleen and vermiform appendice of the caecum, necrosis characterized by cariorrexia of the lymphoid cells in the follicles, was produced by both varieties, but was more frequent and more pronounced with var. weirii. The two varieties, dried and milled, lost some of their toxicity, when kept in closed bottles; but when stored unmilled in cotton sacs, the plants kept their toxicity entirely. Rabbits, to which the two varieties were given, various times in sublethal doses with monthly intervals, did not adquire tolerance against the toxic properties of the plant.

#43 - Experimental poisoning of cattle by Prunus sellowii (Rosaceae)

Abstract in English:

Fresh leaves of Prunus sellowii Sw., a tree suspected to cause mortalities of peracute course in cattle, were given orally to 14 bovines, during its three vegetative stages (sprouting, flowering and frutification), in doses from 2.5 to 5 g/kg. Symptoms seen in these animals were tachycardia, rumen atony, muscular tremors, instability, difficult breathing with open mouth, sternal or lateral decubitus and death or recovery. These symptoms were from slight to moderate in tlie animals that received 2.5 g/kg and severe in those that received 3.5 g/kg or more of the plant. Two animals out of five that received 3.5 g/kg died; doses of 4.3 and 5 g/kg caused the death of all animals. There were no post-mortem findings, but the leaves of the plant were found in the rumen accumulated next to the cardia. There were no histopathological alterations. The clinical symptoms, demonstration of large amounts of HCN in the leaves by the "picric-sodic test" and the quick recovery of two experimentally poisoned animals after intravenous administration of thiosulfate and sodium nitrite, show that P. sellowii is a cyanogenic plant.

#44 - Experimental poisoning of bovines by Baccharis megapotamica var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Compositae)

Abstract in English:

The aerial parts of Baccharis megapotamica Sprengel var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Baker) Barroso, plants which occur in moist areas of southem Brazil, were toxic to cattle. The two varieties showed similar toxic properties, however there were large differences in their lethal doses. These were between 3 and 4 g/kg for var. megapotamica and 1 g/kg for var. weirii (fresh plant material). Fatal poisoning was acute with both varieties, involving mainly the digestive system. The main symptoms shown by the experimental bovines were anorexia and paralysis of the rumen. Tympanitis, salivation, swaying gait, high temperature, increased heart rate and moaning also occurred in some animals. Liquid diarrhea was seen in 3 of the 8 fatal poisonings by var. megapotamica and in only one not fatal poisoning by var. weirii. Increased thirst, restlesness and muscular tremors were seen in poisoning by var. megapotamica. Respiratory rates were increased considerably by poisoning with var. weirii. The most important post-mortem findings were edema of the rumenal wall (seen in 3 of the 4 fatal poisonings by var. weirii, but in only one of the 8 fatal poisonings by var. megapotamica) and congestion of the mucosa of the rumen, abomasum, small intestine, caecum and large intestine. The liver was clearer than normal in 5 of the 8 fatal poisonings by var. megapotamica, but in only one of the 4 fatal poisonings by var. weirii. There were hemorrhages in the epi- and endocardium. The main histological lesions were seen in the rumen, liver and lymphatic tissue. The rumen showed necrosis characterized by pycnosis and karyorrhexis of the epithelial cells, mainly of the stratum spinosum. Coagulative necrosis and lysis of the hepatic cells and shock bodies were seen in the intermediate zone of the hepatic lobule. Lymphatic tissue (spleen, lymphnodes, Peyers plaques) showed necrosis characterized by pycnosis and-karyorrhexis of the lymphoid cells. Poisoning under natural conditions by B. megapotamica var. weirii has been reported and observed, however it is said that cattle do not eat var. megapotamica. Dried plants of the var. megapotamica were still toxic after being stored for a year.

#45 - Poisoning of cattle by Cestrum corymbosum var. hirsutum (Solanaceae) in Santa Catarina

Abstract in English:

A disease of cattle characterized by acute hepatic insufficiency was studied in the state of Santa Catarina. Clinical manifestations were anorexia, apathy, rumen atony, dark and mucous feces, salivation, sunken eyes and muscular tremors. The animals kept their head down or against na obstacle and showed instability of gait. Death occurred 8 to 12 hours after the first symptoms. Post-mortem fmdings in 4 animals were a slightly pale liver, its cut-surface had à nutmeg appearance, and circular hemorrhages of 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter were seen below the capsule. There were also hemorrhages of the serosa of the rumen, omasum, intestine and of the heart, especially at the coronary sulcus and in the endocardium of the left ventricle. In omasum, colon and rectum dried contents were observed in all cases. Histological examination showed coagulation necrosis of the hepatic parenchyma associated with congestion and hemorrhages and steatosis. The disease was experimentally reproduced by oral administration of fresh leaves of Cestrum corymbosum var. hirsutum to 11 bovines. With a single dose of 39 and 35 g/kg or repeated doses of 2.5 and 5 g/kg during 14 to 23 days an acute disease developed and the animals died with clinical signs and macro and microscopic lesions similar to those found in the natural cases. With single doses of 30 g/kg the animals became ill but recovered and with 20 g/kg only one out of 2 animals showed clinical signs. The administration of 0.623 and 1.25 g/kg to 2 calves during 95 days caused no clinical symptoms nor gross or microscopic lesions. The results of this study showed that C. corymbosum var. hirsutum is the cause of the disease whict occurs on the Planalto Catarinense and in the Alto Vale do Itajai, characterized by acute hepatic insufficiency. The ingestion of the plant is related to hunger, since the mortalities occur with more frequency in the periods of lack of pasture. There appears to be a cumulative effect of the plant poison.

#46 - Experimental poisoning in cattle by Brunfelsia pauciflora (Solanaceae)

Abstract in English:

Plant poisoning was suspected as a cause of the so called "swollen-brisket-disease" (a disease characterized by edema of the brisket) which occurs in certain areas of the State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. In order to establish the etiology of this disease, Brunfelsia pauciflora (Cham. Et Schlecht.) Benth. (of the Solanaceae family) was fed experimentally to cattle, as it is found in large quantities in the pastures where the disease occurs. The plant was given in the fresh or dried stage, in single or repeated administrations to 11 bovines. All but one experimental animal showed symptoms of poisoning; none died due to the ingestion of the plant. The symptoms always seen in experimental poisoning by B. pauciflora, was mainly nervous excitement. This was very uniform, but varied in intensity. Symptoms included playing with the tongue, chewing movements, salivation, restlessness, stretching and shaking of the hindlegs, excitability and muscular tremors, sometimes with sudden contractions, lack of stability and the animal sometimes falling to the ground. Four animals head epileptic seizures. Loss of appetite and weight and liquid feces, also occurred. In the experiments with single doses, the symptoms were observed during 4 to 9 days, in the last third of which being less intense. In the experiments with repeated doses, symptoms grew less intense with time until they disappeared. They only reappeared or intensified on rainy days, later during the experiment not even then. Postmortem and histopathological examinations showed no lesions in 6 slaughtered experimental animals. The nervous symptoms seen in experimental poisoning by B. pauciflora are very different from those seen in the "swollen brisket disease", which are of cardiac origin.

#47 - Experimental poisoning of cattle by Stryphnodendron coriaceum (Leg. Mimosoideae) pods

Abstract in English:

Clinical and pathological data are presented on the experimental poisoning of cattle by Stryphnodendron coriaceum Benth. (Leg. Mimosoideae), an important toxic plant in the State of Piauí, northeastern Brazil. The whole pods of this tree were administered orally, in single or split doses, to 15 young bovines. A single dose of 10 g/kg caused death of all animals. The sarne dose split in 2 or 4 daily administrations (5 g/kg for 2 or 2.5 g/kg for 4 days) caused death of one third and symptoms of variable intensity in the rest of the animals; 1.25 g/kg/day given for 8 days, did not cause any poisoning symptoms. First symptoms in the animals which suffered severe poisoning (12 animals) were observed 24 to 72 hours after feeding pods. The course of the poisoning in the animals that died varied form 3 to 23 days. Digestive disturbances were the most obvious clinical symptoms; the most important of these were congestion of the mucosa of the oral cavity and salivation. Vomiting of ruminal contents, with consequent aspiration pneumonia was seen in some animals. There were some cases of diarrhea. Slight photosensitization of short duration occurred initially; in one animal the skin lesions were severe enough as to evolve from the congestive phase to exudation and necrosis of the superficial parts of the skin. There were some cases of slight icterus. The most important post-mortem finding was edema of the mucosa of the abomasum. Histopathological examinations showed degenerative changes in liver and kidney and sometimes bile pigment in the liver.

#48 - Experimental poisoning of cattle by Senecio desiderabilis (Compositae)

Abstract in English:

Studies on "swollen brisket disease", a heart complaint of subacute to chronic course, occurring in cattle in Santa Catarina, suggest that the probable cause is a toxic plant. Corisequently various suspicious plants were administered experimentally to bovines. The habitat of one of these plants, Senecio desiderabilis Vell., of the Compositae family, coincided well with the pastures where the disease occurs. Feeding it caused a chronic poisoning, whose clinical-pathological picture was characterized by icterus, abdominal contractions, nervous symptoms, liver cirrhosis and edemas. This picture is very similar to that which occurs in poisoning by pyrrolizidine containing plants, but is very different from that seen in "swollen brisket disease". S. desiderabilis probably belongs to the less poisonous species of Senecio already studied in Brazil. Only 2 bovines fed S. desiderabilis showed symptoms of poisoning and died; they had ingested the plant in its flowering stage at daily doses of 10 g/kg (fresh weight), one for 29, the other for 102 days. Larger single doses of 20 and 40 g/kg, or smaller ones (2.5 and 5 g/kg) of flowering plants repeated for 281 days, or 10 g/kg in the vegetative stage given for 141 days, did not produce symptoms of poisoning or death. One other bovine receiving 10 g/kg of the plant at various growth stages for 43 days, was also without symptoms. But in a few (3) of the bovines which did not show symptoms of poisoning, slight liver lesions were found at post-mortem and/or on histological examination, when sacrificed 2 or more years later.

#49 - "Swollenbrisket disease" (edema of the sternal region) in cattle in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract in English:

The data obtained in the area where "swollen-brisket disease" is found showed that the disease has a subacute to chronic course and that it is characterized by heart insufficiency (due to fibrosis of the myocardium) with consequent subcutaneous edema of the brisket. The disease occurs in the State of Santa Catarina, mainly in the county of Urubici, and to a smaller degree in others, such as Bom Retiro, Curitibanos, Lebon Regis, Santa Cecilia and Caçador. It affects cattle older than 4 years, especially cows after calving, and older oxen; there is evidence that horses are also affected. The disease occurs only in areas covered with arboreous vegetation in mountanous areas at Heights between 1100 and 1400 meters above sea levei and affects animals bom in the area or those brought in after at least 2 years in the area. Morbidity is always above 50% and lethality 100% when the animals remain in the area. The immediate transfer of animals at the onset of the disease to areas where there is no problem, does not usually influence the course of the disease or avoid death. However 3 animals, in an advanced stage of the disease, transferred to an area where it does not occur, were seen to· reco ver partially, possibly due to little exercise. The clinical manifestations are mainly weakness and a very prominent and pulsating jugular vein. Auscultation reveals modifications of the heart rhythm. After some weeks or months an edema of the brisket appears, and this is the most characteristic symptom of the disease. The maio post-mortem findings are the edema of the tissues of the brisket, ascitis, hydropericardium, hydrotorax, edema of the mesenterium, especially mesocolon, edema of the folds of the abomasum and of the gallbladder wall. The heart ventricules generally are dilated, especially on the right side. The cut surface of the myocardium reveals white-greyish indistinct areas throughout the interventricular septum, and streaks of the sarne colour in the walls of the ventricules, especially the right one. The tiver is very enlarged, its borders rounded and darkened; it is harder than normal and its cut-surface has a nutmeg appearance. Histological examination shows intracellular edema in the heart characterized by swelling and, to a lesser degree vacuolization of the heart fibers, which sometimes develops into cell lysis. There is also extracelular edema, marked diffuse intersticial fibrosis and occasionally the presence of giant miogenic cells. There is a very high degree of congestion in the tiver with disappearance of hepatocites, transforming the central, intermedium and part of the periphery of the lobules, into blood seas. There is also some cloudy swelling, vacuolization and lysis of hepatic cells, fibrosis in the portal areas and near to the tiver capsule and some protiferation of the biliary ducts. Histological examination of the organs of 2 horses showed very similar heart and tiver lesions to those seen in cattle, suggesting the sarne cause. Studies are in progress to estabtish the etiology of "swollen-brisket disease".

O exame do coração geralmente revela ventrículos dilatados.

#50 - Tetrapterys spp. (Malpighiaceae) as the cause of death of cattle due to cardiac lesions

Abstract in English:

This study reports on a disease of cattle which occurs over large areas of southeastern Brazil, and whose main characteristics are severe regressive changes and fibrosis of the heart. Clinical signs included edema of the brisket, a prominent pulsating jugular vein and cardiac arrythmia. In the majority of the cases the course of the disease was subacute (1-5 weeks), at times it was more chronic (months), but only exceptionally was it peracute. The most important post-mortem findings, as determined from 14 necropsies, were clearer areas of the heart muscle as seen through the epicardium, and sharp white areas and streaks across most of the cut surface of the myocardium. At times the myocardium seemed harder than normal. In general, liver alterations varied from accentuated lobulation to a nutmeg appearance of the tissue. Subcutaneous edema in the sternal region and in the body cavities were frequently found. Histological examination of the heart revealed intra- and extracelular edema, lysis, an increase in tlie eosinophilia of groups of fibers (incipient necrosis), massive necrosis, apoptosis, fiber atrophy, inflammatory infiltrations, fibrosis and occasionaly myogenic giant cells. In the liver, congestion, cloudy swelling, vacuolization and lysis ofhepatocytes, edema of Disse's space, and portal and centrolobular fibrosis were seen. The disease was experimentally reproduced through daily administration of the fresh sprouts (5-20g/kg during 9 to 55 days) or dried sprouts (20g/kg during 25 days) of Tetrapterys spp. (T. acutifolia and T. multiglandulosa, fam. Malpighiaceae). Administration of the fresh sprouts in smaller daily doses (2.5g/kg during 130 days) or in a single large dose (l00g/kg), as well as repeated administrations of the fresh or dried ripe leaves (20g/k daily for 64 or 30 days) orof the fruits (2.7-10.9g/kg daily for 6 days), only occasionally caused mild symptoms of poisoning. The course of poisoning in the animals that died was subcaute (9-20 days) in six and chronic (1-3 months) in three. Clinically, the animals showed locomotor difficulties, slowness, weakness, edema of the brisket, a prominent pulsating jugular vein and cardiac arrythmia. Post-mortem examination sometimes showed clearer areas of the heart through the epicardium and, in all but one case, whitish areas and streaks on the cut surface of the myocardium. Subcutaneous and body cativy edemas were less common. Histological lesions were present mainly in the heart and were identical to those found in the naturally occurring disease, although they were not as intense. It is concluded that the 2 species of Tetrapterys are the cause of this disease based upon the following: 1) the disease occurs only in pastures where the plants are found; 2) the course of the disease and clinical signs of experimental cases are very similar to those of the spontaneous disease; and 3) in experimental animals it was possible to reproduce the sarne heart lesions as seen in the naturally occurring disease. Case histories and histopathological findings in organs of fetuses studied, suggest strongly that Tetrapterys spp. are also responsible for abortions in cattle.
