Abstract in English:

Lázaro N.S., Tibana A., Reis E.M.F., Rodrigues D.P., Quintaes B.R. & Hofer E. 2004. [Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and plasmid profile in Salmonella Muenster isolated from swine and abattoir environment, Brazil.] E-mail: nslazaro@aol.com Thirty-eight strains of Salmonella Muenster, isolated from swine and the abattoir environment, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from March 1991 to February 1992, were analyzed for the presence of plasmids. The strains were selected according to their profile regarding the antimicrobials: streptomycin, tetracycline, sulphonamide and sulfametoxazole-trimethoprim. Thirteen strains were resistant to one or several antimicrobials, 18 with intermediate degree and seven were sensitive. Plasmids varying in size from 1.2 Kb to 42 Kb were detected in 37 (97.36%) of the 38 samples, corresponding to 11 different profiles (P1- P11), varying from 1 to 6 plasmids per model. The number and plasmids diversity was greater than the resistance marks for strains. The plasmid of 2.85 Kb was the most frequent, being present in 83.78% of the 37 strains; only the one of 7.5 Kb was detected at the two slaughterhouses. There was no parallelism between resistance pattern and plasmidial profile, and a same antibiotype was found in several plasmidial profiles. The results of the present investigation, allowed us to conclude that the plasmid characterization is an useful and simple tool for the epidemiological typing of this sorovar.

#22 - Characteristics of the equine seasonal ovulatory curve. A study performed in slaughtered mares from southern Brazil

Abstract in English:

The ovaries of 1,374 mares collected at an abattoir were examined for gross evidence of ovulation such as hemorrhagic or luteal bodies. The exatninations were carried out from February 1984 to February 1985 in mares from the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana. The ovulatory rates observed for 1984 were 54.41% in February; 49.61% in March; 32,74% in April; 28.57% in May; 6.85% in June; 3.06% in July; 6.0% in August; 9.65% in September; 30.77% in October; 40.32% in November and 51.69% in December. In January and February of 1985 the ovulation rates observed were respectively 43.01 % and 43.48%. Of all ovulations 50.12% occurred in the right ovary and 49.88% in the left ovary. There was 6.97% of multiple ovulations.

#23 - Frequency of atrophic rhinitis in swine slaughtered in Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Gross examination of the nasal structures of 1273 swine of various breeds, of both sexes, ra.hging in age from six to eight months, performed at slaughterhouses in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, showed that 300(23.6%) had turbinate atrophy or necrosis, lesions characteristic ofatrophic rhinitis. Seventy-five of these animals also showed deviation of the nasal septum. Twenty-three (2.4%) of the remaining 973 animals, without atrophic rhinitis, showed nasal septum deviation. A positive correlation (p < 0.01) was shown between the degree of turbina te atrophy and nasal septum deviation, demonstrated by an increase of 15 .9% as the severity oflesions increased. The frequency of atrophy of the turbinate banes varied from 18.0% to 48.9% in the principal swine producing regions of the state.

#24 - Salmonellae from slaughtered pigs of Pará, Brazil

Abstract in English:

The bacteriological processing of the submandibular lymphnodés of 400 slaughtered pigs from 37 different rural holdings of 9 districts from the island Ilha do Marajó and nordeast of the state Para, Brazil, revealed the isolation of 51 (12,57%) salmonellae belonging to 6 serogroups and the following 10 serotypes: S. avonmouth 18 (35.29%), S. seremban 16 (31.37%), S. typhimurium 6 (11.76%), S. java and S. remo 3 (5.88%), and S. newport, S. miami, S. münster, S. oslo and S. tshiongwe once (1.96%). The most prevalent serotypes S. avonmouth and S. seremban found in this area were considered exotic types for pigs. The swine breeding in this area is very primitive and the pigs were of native type without a defined breed. The pigs are living free near the houses and on surrounding fields. The feed consisted mainly of plants, roots, fruits, insects, and other invertebrates found in the soH and·of the rest of slaughtered animals or cadavers found on the field.
