E-mail: jrmodolo@fmvz.unesp.br In order to assess the frequency of dairy goats seropositive for Neospora caninum in the state of São Paulo, and its relationship with age, sex, presence of dogs and reproductive problems in goat pens, serum samples were obtained from 923 goats of both sexes older than 3 months of age. Samples were collected in 17 properties located in different municipalities. Neospora agglutination test (NATe”25) was used to determine the presence of Neospora caninum in all animals. Epidemiological and reproductive data were obtained through a questionnaire which was administered in all goat pens. Significance level was set at 5% for all statistical tests. N. caninum positivity rate was 19.77%. Only one of the properties had no seropositive animal revealing N. caninum diffusion in the state. Seropositivity frequency did not correlate with sex, age, or reproductive problems. However, the presence of dogs was associated with a higher frequency of N. caninum seropositivity. A choroplethic map with hatch patterns showing the geographical distribution of goats seropositive for Neospora caninum may considerably contribute to geographic epidemiological studies and the development of disease control strategies.

E-mail: saravilar@bol.com.br The experiment was performed to determine the kid management that ensures the best passive immunity, and to evaluate the relationship between passive immunity, neonatal morbidity and performance. Blood samples were obtained from 58 Saanen kids before colostrum ingestion and 30h after. The kids were submitted to five treatments: (T1) kids were allowed to nurse the dam for 24 hours ingesting colostrum ad libitum; (T2) kids were bottle-fed with 200mL colostrum in the first hour of life; (T3) kids were bottle-fed with 400 mL colostrum, 200mL in the first hour and 200mL 8 hours after birth; (T4) kids were bottle-fed with 400mL colostrum, 200mL in the first hour and 200mL 14 hours after birth; (T5) kids were bottle-fed with 600mL of colostrum, 200mL in the first hour, 200ml 12 hours after birth, and 200mL at 24 hours of life. Serum levels of gamaglobulins were determined by electrophoresis. The occurrence of diseases was monitored from birth to 28 days. Daily weight gains were used to evaluate the performance until weaning. The lowest concentration of g-globulin was observed in Group 2 (1,57g/dL) and the highest in Group 3 (2,60g/dL). In spite of higher levels of passive immunity Group 3 showed more animals with scours, however no statistical differences were observed. The immune status at 30 hours postpartum was not associated with neonatal weight gain.

#13 - Eradication or integrated managment of neotropical myiases of the Americas?, 23(32):131-138

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Moya Borja G.E. 2003. [Eradication or integrated managment of neotropical myiases of the Americas?] E-mail: gemoya@ufrrj.br The eradication of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, from USA, Central America and the North of Africa has been achieved by rearing and releasing sterile males. Why we do not decide to eradicate this insect from the southamerican countries too? ln this paper the scientific, ecological and economic reasons before taking such a courageous decision are discussed. The human botfly, Dermatobia hominis, has not been eradicated from any country, because there is so far no technique available for mass production in artificial diets. Studies on dispersion, sexual behavior and aggregation sites of the adults in the field are also not known. Why the neotropical myiases will continue to be treated basically with chemicals, recommendations for insecticide resistance management and studies on alternative methods are discussed trying to apply in the future an ecologically based pest management of the screwworm and the human botfly.

RESUMO.- Moya Borja G.E. 2003. [Eradication or integrated managment of neotropical myiases of the Americas?]

#14 - Eradication of Herpesvirus Bovine-1 (BHV-1) from a dairy cattle herd with a semi-intensive management., 18(2):65-68

ABSTRACT.- Del Fava C., De Stefano E., Pituco E.M., Bilynsky J.M.C.V., Okuda L.H., Pozzi, C.R., Veríssimo C.J. & Demarchi J.J.A.A. 1998. [Eradication of Herpesvirus Bovine-1 (BHV-1) from a dairy cattle herd with a semi-intensive management.] Postal 60, Nova Odessa, SP 13460-000, Brazil. To eradicate the BHV-1 from a dairy cattle herd without vaccination, a preliminar serological survey was performed in 154 animals, that revealed 15.6% seropositives for BHV- 1. The test used was serum neutralization with the microtitration technique. The seropositive nonpregnant cows were immediately eliminated from the herd and the pregnant cows were isolated and eliminated after parturiation. The calves with colostral antibodies were kept in the herd. There were no seropositive animals between the 6 to 12 months old calves and the heifers. The animals were monitored serologically every 3 months for 21 months and afterwords in 2 semestral intervals. The seropositive nonpregnant, pregnant and the nursing cows were the source of BHV-1 infecction. In order to maintain a BHV-1 free herd, measurements of control had been taken, as the utilization of virus-free semen, quarantine when animals were introduced into the herd, and semestral serological surveys. Through these measurements the farm has been BHV-1 free for 18 months.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 18(2):61-68. Instituto de Zootecnia, Cx. Postal 60, Nova Odessa, SP 13460-000, Brazil.

#15 - Effect of a management system on grazing behaviour, ponderal growth and parasitie infestation of Suffolk ewes

Abstract in English:

Grazing behaviour, ponderal growth and level of parasitic infestation were studied in Suffolk breed sheep, from 1994 to 1995, in Nova Odessa, São Paulo. Two management systems were compared: restricted grazing, where the animals were released to the pastures at 9:50am and confined at 5:30pm, and 24 hour grazing, where the animals were maintained all the time in the paddocks, but with access to shelters. Thirty-four adult ewes were used in the summer period (17 under restricted grazing and 17 full-time grazing), and 42 ewes in the winter period (21 with restricted grazing and 21 full-time grazing). Also, for both seasons, 12 traceranimals, six in each grazing system, were used to obtain worm counts from their digestive tracts. For three consecutive days, grazing behaviour, that is, whether grazing or not, was observed in January/February (summer) and July/August (winter) at 30 minute intervals from 7:00am to 5:30pm, also whether the animals stayed in the sun or shade, irrespective of whether they were grazing or not. The level of parasitic infestation was evaluated under each system by eggs per gram countings (EPG) of the herd and the traceranimals, as well as by larvae count. It was concluded that restriction of grazing time by itself does not provide any effective control of parasitic infestation in sheep, however a better control was obtained in the summer period. Restricted grazing time was compensated by the greater activity of the animals during the hotter hours of the day, however, this behaviour affected the animal performance, resulting in lower weight gains. Greater forage availability in relation to estimated consumption may explain the similarity between the grazing times observed in both management systems, either in the summer or in the winter.

#16 - Outbreaks of periodontitis in calves ("Cara inchada") related to soil cultivation

Abstract in English:

"Cara inchada" of cattle (CI) is a periodontitis which occurs in young animals during tooth eruption and is related to tree clearance atid sowing pasture grasses in certain areas of Central Brazil once covered by forest or savanna vegetation. The findings of outbreaks of CI on two farms in the State of São Paulo are reported. In these outbreaks the calves showed severe emaciation, diarrhea, various periodontal lesions, halitosis and loss of premolar teeth of the upper jaw. On one farm the disease occurred after feeding sugar cane harvested from a newly cultivated area, in which the prevalence of periodontal lesions was 61.5% and mortality 22.1%. On the other farm, the outbreak occurred after cattle grazed on recently improved pastures. In the dry season the animals were also fed supplements of forage and silage grown on the sarne farm. The prevalence of CI in the latter was 51.9% and mortality 3.6%. It is concluded that there is a relationship between new outbreaks of periodontitis and soil and pasture improvement, i.e. ploughing, harrowing, application of lime and fertilizers.
