E-mail: pedro.bianchi@usp.br The joints anatomical description highlights the standards for biomechanical conditions that must be considered in the selection of a particular animal species. Thus, the objective was to describe the metacarpal phalangeal joint in sheep, for its architecture and adjacent structures. For this purpose, we used ten adult sheep, Santa Ines breed, males and females, randomly chosen. The anatomical specimens for the study were collected by the disarticulation of the distal row of carpal and metacarpal bone of an sheep’s forelimb. To observe the joint capsule, adjacent structures were overruled and their topographical relationships with such joint analyzed. The longitudinal measures of the joint capsule and the III-IV metacarpal bones, proximal phalanges III and IV proximal phalanx were taken. Through the results, it is concluded that the metacarpal phalangeal joint in sheep presents similar topographical relationships described for other ruminants, with connections at the proximal and recesses at the distal areas.

E-mail: sheilacr@fmvz.unesp.br The purpose of this study was to compare goniometric values for forelimb and hind limbs in clinically healthy Santa Ines sheep with two ages (young and adult). Thirty female Santa Ines sheep were separated into two groups of 15 animals each: Group 1 with 6 to 12-month-old sheep (classified as young), and Group 2 with 3 to 6-year-old sheep (classified as adult). Maximum flexion, maximum extension, and range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder, elbow, carpal, hip, stifle, and tarsal joints, in the right and left limbs were measured with a standard transparent plastic goniometer. The measurements were performed in triplicate by two independent investigators with the sheep in a standing position. There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left sides, between investigators or between groups. In conclusion, in clinically healthy sheep the goniometric values were not influenced by age.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Almeida M.F., Mamprim M.J., Vulcano L.C. & Rahal S.C. 2011. [Contribution of negative contrast in computed tomography arthrography of the normal canine stifle.] E-mail: mari_veterinaria@yahoo.com.br The cranial cruciate ligament rupture is one of the most common causes of canine hind limb lameness. The radiographic and ultrasonographic are methods of diagnosis frequently used in small animal clinics, but there are few studies of computed tomography to exam the stifle joint in dogs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of negative contrast in computed tomography arthrography of the normal stifle of dogs for the visualization of intra-joint structures, and to standardize the use of contrast in this joint. Twenty-four hind limbs from dogs of several breeds were used. They were selected based on history of absence of previous stifle joint disease and normal radiographic, ultrasonographic and macroscopic exams. The experiment was designed in two groups: Group I animals weighing up to 20 kg, and Group II animals weighing above 20 kg. Tomographic sections were done with the limb flexed and extended. The amount of air used for the joint capsule distension was approximately 49 ml for group I and 81 ml for group II. A latex tube was used on the distal portion of the stifle to reduce air escaping through the long digital extensor tendon, which has intra-joint communication. In all joints, the tomographic image allowed the visualization of the following structures: cranial and caudal cruciate ligament, medial and lateral menisci, patellar ligament, medial and lateral collateral ligament and joint capsule. Thus, the negative contrast (air) showed to be an effective alternative in the evaluation of the stifle anatomical structures by using tomography arthrography.

E-mail: robertagodoy@unb.br Physical, biochemical and cytological characteristics of the temporomandibular joint synovial fluid were studied in ten clinically normal horses. It is a viscous, pale yellow, clear fluid and without flocculent material at room temperature. There was blood contamination in three samples, they presented red-yellow to red and cloudy. The range of glucose levels were 100 to 250 and its protein concentration was up to 3,8g/dL. Nucleated cells mean number was 417 cells/µL, with predominating large mononuclear cells and lymphocytes. Equine temporomandibular synovial fluids can be easily evaluated, being feasible in clinical and surgical routine, and the information may be useful to the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of animals with temporomandibular alterations.

E-mail: khadijehette@yahoo.com.br The aim of this study was to evaluate the stifle joint of 18 healthy Santa Ines sheep in different age groups, utilizing both radiographic and ultrasonographic exams. The animals were divided into 3 equal groups: Group I, 6-8 months old (mean weight of 25 kg); Group II, 2 years old (mean weight of 50 kg); Group III, 3-5 years old (mean weight of 55 kg). Radiographically the lateral femoral condyle was larger than medial femoral condyle, and the lateral tibial condyle was larger than the medial tibial condyle in the craniocaudal view. The patella showed a pyramidal base and a pointed apex in mediolateral view. The medial sesamoid bone of the gastrocnemius muscle was observed in one, and the lateral sesamoid bone was observed in four of 36 hindlimbs evaluated. Out of all the radiographs, the fibula was identified in only one animal - a Group III sheep. The distal femoral, proximal tibial and tibial tuberosity physes could be evaluated in all radiographs. These physes were closed or semiclosed in all animals of Group III. According to ultrasonographic examination, the convex surface of the patella was observed as a hyperechogenic line with an acoustic shadow and the articular cartilage of the femoral condyles was observed as a hypoechogenic line outlining the bone surface. The intermediate patellar ligament presented as a fibrilar hyperechogenic structure measuring 1.2-3.2mm in thickness. The lateral and medial menisci appeared triangular in shape, slightly heterogeneous, and moderately echogenic. In conclusion, the radiographic images were useful to evaluate the bone structures of the stifle, and physis closure and the ultrasonographic images allowed to identify soft tissue structures, such as menisci and patellar ligament.

E-mail: baccarin@usp.br The effects of biomechanical stress on inflammatory and adaptative responses of articular tissues in athletic horses were investigated. Synovial fluid was collected from the metacarpophalangeal joints of athletic horses before exercise and 3, 6, 24 hours after exercise, and as well as from the control group (without exercise). Apoptosis/necrosis percentage, TNF-a and PGE2 were determined by annexin V/PI assay, bioassay (L929) and ELISA, respectively. The results showed that total leukocyte count was higher in the athletic group when is compared with the control group. Three hours after the exercise was done there were increases of cellular apoptosis (P>0.05) and necrosis (P<0.05) percentage, PGE2 concentration (P<0.05) and protein concentration (P<0.05), and the TNF-a level has dropped. The athletic group showed moderate level of joint inflammation after the strenuous exercise. This articular tissue response to biomechanical insult due to the exercise, with high intensity after 3 hours after training associated with normality after 24 hours, reveals the articular adaptation to physical stress in athletic horses.

E-mail: khadijehette@yahoo.com.br The aim of this study was to evaluate arthroscopically the stifle joint of healthy Santa Ines sheep with different ages, and observe the joint elements according to the established portals. Eighteen Santa Ines sheep were divided into 3 equal groups according to the chronological age: GI - 6 to 8 months old (mean weight 25 kg), G II - 2 years old (mean weight 50 kg), and G III - 3.5 to 5 years old (mean weight 55 kg). Three arthroscopic portals were established: craniolateral primary arthroscopic portal, drainage outflow portal, and craniomedial instrumental portal. The patella, the trochlear groove and ridges, the medial and lateral femoral condyles, and the long digital extensor tendon were easily identified. After removing a great portion of the infrapatellar fat pad using a shaver, the cruciate ligaments and the menisci could be observed, even though with some difficulty. The limbs were flexed and extended to identify the cruciate ligaments. Varus and valgus stress of the joint was used to improve meniscal observation. The difficulty level was inversely proportional to the joint size. In conclusion, the arthroscopic portals allowed identification of the main elements of the knee joint, regardless of animal age, and the arthroscopic method had as advantage early postoperative recovery of the animals.
